Blow by

I have a 05 cummins and it's blowing oil out of the blow by tube. Also when you first start it up after letting it sit for a few hours there's a puff of white smoke. Not sure if those go together or my but I've heard the horror stories of the leaking injectors and washing the cylinder walls. Any info would help. Thanks

If there's no fuel in the oil, and the truck starts good without a long crank needed, your injectors are probably good. Sounds like you have a broken ring/rings. More than likely cylinders #1&#6

Just a casual reader, but, wow - what does it take to fix the rings, anyway? From the tone of the reply, its almost as if its preferable for it to be the rings and not the injectors so I had to ask ...

Usually if it is a broken ring, it has scored the cylinder and requires a short block rebuild with a bore out or sleeve. Broken rings thankfully are not that common.

If it is an injector, one can usually diagnose this quickly and replace the bad injector and no damage is done. In extreme cases, a bad injector doesn't shut off and will torch a hole through a piston or dump enough fluid to cause hydraulic lock that could break a piston or rod and etc. Again, very extreme cases.

To the OP... the white smoke indicates over fueling at start and what you describe sounds like an injector or two leaking into the cylinder after shutdown.

Take the oil filler cap off and let it idle and put your hand over the oil filler hole to measure how much blow by you are getting.

If you're seeing blue smoke when first starting or notice it is using oil combined with that blow by, it may be rebuild time... but some trucks in the condition you describe go on for a long time with no further issues than oil consumption.
