open up the intake and exhaust on ANY combustion engine and you'll see an increase in mileage and performance both, the muffler put on the CTD trucks from the factory is one of the most restrictive designs there is, lots of guys go to a straight pipe and it sounds really cool for short distance driving (I like it!), may get on your nerves if you do an long distance runs though.
AFE air filter is a good choice to. just dont expect a huge change though.
Aerodynamics has a lot to do with it to, bed cover goes a long way there!

Some manufacturers of synthetic oil state a mpg increase when switching. I didn't see any, but that's probably because I added a Frt BrushGuard at the same time, that usually cuts 1mpg.

I just installed a LITERITE tonneau cover last evening and will be going up to the Dallas auto show tomorrow. The cover should give 1-2 mpg increase. I have seen some claim a 3mpg increase by adding the Tonneau Cover. Heading to Ocala, Florida fro Central Texas next Thursday and plan on keeping it at 68mph...drives the wife crazy I'm not blazing down the road 75-80mph. ...

I installed a Amsoil TS 189 Foam Air Filter...didn't notice any difference other than slight-better pickup from light and Turbo whine kicks in a little faster.

Haven't done anything to exhaust system yet...Concur about the all OEM muffler's being restrictive...Don't think I'll go straight pipe though...I like the little sanity I have left...

Best thing is to keep it around 65-68 on hwy. Once you go past 2000 rpms you're using more fuel

Talked to a guy with a 4X4 automatic dually running the hemi engine, said he wanted to see if it was his driving that was causing the mileage he was getting.

So he filled the tank before getting on a nice level stretch of highway, set the cruise for 55 mph, then reset the trip computer, an hour later... his mileage "had gone UP to 9 MPG"!!! WITH AN EMPTY TRUCK!!!
Try the same thing with your Cummins! I did, even took a picture of the trip computer readout for the guy (I couldnt believe it myself!).

Try this and just remember what those V8's out there are getting, you'll never worry about your mileage again!!!
9 MPG! HA! HA!

Try slowing down and easier exceleration. Keep the RPM at 2000 or below. Keep your foot out of it, use the power only when really needed. Have gotten as high as 26 mpg at 45 mph on the '03 and 28 on the '97.

Check out my photo gallary, I knew if I didnt take a picture nobody in there right mind would believe me!!! I wouldnt believe it myself if I hadnt done it!
But it went as high as 27.2 before I pulled over and topped off the tank to verify the trip computer hadnt lost its mind!
Again this number isnt very realistic, I set the cruise at 55 THEN reset the trip computer and just cruised for an hour. So there's no idle time, or acceleration involved, plus I nearly got ran down by every other car on the road going so slow!
But thats exactly what the guy with the hemi told me he had done to.

I have had 99 mpg on the over head display. Reset while going down a long hill. 99 is where it will top out.

ok going to chime in here. I have an 01 dually 4x4 edge ez afe and when i run it at 70 75 i get 15 maybe 17 if im lucky rather i think the trip is lying lol . but i tried the slow down theory the other day drove for about an hour at 65 and when i hit the trip she said 20.4 that is the highest i hvae seen. slowing down definetly gets you better fuel economy . but you might just be dead when you get there

I have a 2500 4x4 Auto and typically get around 15.5 - 16 in town heavy stop and go short trips and around 18 or so on the interstate at 70mph. I am running a 4" straight exhaust and that is about it for mods (gonna keep the paper filter dont want warranty worries). Do any of the "boxes" out there do much to help with economy? Has anyone done "real testing" of the tonneau covers to see how much they help? does the torque tube or TAG help much? I am looking for input from people who have tried and proven that they work not just the sellers advertising gimics. Thanks for any replies and help.

I get 17 mpg in town with about 2/3rds commute on the highway, and on the last trip almost 20 mpg on the highway. An auto has higher overall gearing as I recall so it can do well on the highway, but will probably suffer more in town. The HO can get as good to slightly better mileage han the SO, I guess as less pedal is needed to get up to speed. As others have mentioned highway mpg is heavily related to cruising speed, and obviously by load. I haven't had time to look but it'd be interesting to see what Dodge did on the recently released half ton street truck, as they had to address wind drag, and find out what we could benefit from.

Anyone wanna try dimpling their truck with a ball peen hammer to see if it reduces drag like it does on a golf ball :^)

There was a article on another site from a university lab, it indicated that the best aerodynamics may be had from a device simular to a regular bed cap(topper,etc..) with the exception of it meeting the tailgate at a constant angle from the rear of the cab!!! That only leaves one problem, none are available on the market that I know of....( Almost would look like the lines of an Avalanch in a exagerated form),and what would really be cool is if it would raise in the rear to a level stance to accept more cargo using canvas sides like the "canback" system. Just my .02 cents. Oh and by the way , all is for naught unless travel is at a signifigant speed, and 45 mph is supposed to be the "PEAK" efficiancy for our trucks, after that wind resistance goes up by the square(kinda have to be in top gear on the torque platau to get to the sweet spot). there has been some good discussion on air dams also. they are good for engine air flow, but not nessacarily for mpg. Many mpg discussions are deceiving due to speed, load and wind.Personally I think real time/world conditions in accordance with ones patterns are the most practical comparisons to pay attention to ie... I have just 20k on the odometer and recently can get 18 mph average with average speed at 37 mph. That is using stanidyne fuel treatment with a open bed and a two inch lift up front. Will be converting exhaust and intake in the few weeks, but summer fuel will probally hit about the same time and skew my average up a bit.

The ez edge and turnbuckled waste gate hasn't hurt my mileage. I usually get 17-19 on the highway. If I can keep it under 2000rpm I will get the best mileage (19, even saw as high as 21 but that was from Casper wyo to Salt Lake, Utah which is one long downhill stretch). This is with 3.55 gears and the stock 2.65 tires. My truck was born with 4.10 gears but I didn't like the 2300 rpms you would turn at 75-80 so I installed 3.55's. Bigger tires were not an option as I didn't want to raise the truck anymore as we do occasionally tow the race car (enclosed 24ft), and a 21ft deck boat.

How about this?... Is there a way outside of using a "box" to increase the timing? i would think a mild timing increase would increase fuel economy without requiring loads more fuel. Not sure just a thought. Gonna order one of the full tilt covers in the next couple of weeks and see if that helps at highway speeds...
