Re:banging noise

Before I bought my truck (6spd) I drove an automatic and noticed that you are at the mercy of the computer for shifts and noises. The truck I drove was my managers own and had about 4 or 5k on it at that time. It had many undercarriage noises that mine does not have. (droan noise when it shifted to OD) But I do have the clutch chatter in neutral. Not a big deal. With the half arsed shift patterns (somebody said they lift their foot to shift) and the odd noises I chose the 6spd. One way to isolate whether it is the exhaust is use rubber bungee cords to hold the exhaust in different positions and see if that changes the noise. Make sure no contact between the exhaust and the powertrain. Good luck. Hey does Toyota make a diesel Tundra???
True but the "Chuffing" is just as pronounced on the manuals if the driver has the turbo spun up and then drops the R's too fast by not making a good smooth shift.

Re:banging noise

I was sorta talking about the droan and the OD shift noises. I understand what the chuffing is. We could get our old L10 to make wicked noise near the end of its life.

Re:banging noise

I just sent a notice to DC to start the Lemon Law process :-[ I hate to do it, but I need a truck that works. I just returned from a 3 hour trip listening to the noice the entire time, except when I turned up the radio loud. The "chufing" when the truck shifts under load was present also. Everytime that happens, my wife and I think that the transmission is going to be on the ground behind the truck!

Re:banging noise

I got several emails wondering if I got the noises fixed. I have had no luck what so ever, so I will let you know how the lemon law works for me.

Re:banging noise

I have the same chuffing noise on my 03. I will try the rubber insert around the dip stick and see if that helps. That noise really sounds bad...Hopefully it is not doing any damage to the tranny...
If its the turbo chuff your talking about then -no, it can't harm the trans cuz it has nothing to do with the trans. The sound is from the abrupt slow down of the turbo and is an "air" noise. What its hard on is the turbo shaft.
Thats interesting, I had not thought about that. I have heard of others getting rid of the gate as a power adder and wonder if anyone that has done that has noted the chuff going away?

Re:banging noise

Landshark, any progress on this?

I am sure DC has a fix and someone knows exactly whats wrong with your truck. Problem is finding that dealer. I am convinced that one big problem is the learning curve. New motor, new truck. Dealers are all trying to figure it out as well. Course they roll Lemons off the line everyday.
Good luck.

Good luck with the lemon law. It's not as easy as it sounds. Been there, done that and no fun. I purchased a new 95 Corvette that dealer service guy left upper coolant tank cap off and set it on top of the firewall. When he slammed the hood it cracked the paint and fiberglass. I was on the phone with someone every day for months. GM bought it back just as it was to go to arbitration.

Re:banging noise

Well, so far DC is seemingly working with me on the buy back. I am almost done, but they have not stated how much they are going to give me back. I am not sure if I want to get a new truck from them or just the money and got else where. I am happy with the truck, except for the problems, just very unhappy with DC and how the dealers and the consumer line handled the problems. I should know in 10 days what the outcome is. I will keep you posted.
