Ball Joint Club

This was one club I was hoping to avoid. Found out this morning that all four are bad at 47,000 miles, of which 46,500 would be all on pavement. I'm going back with greasable ones that will hopefully last at least twice that long. My wallet just got a lot lighter, thanks Dodge.

I read a post about those the other day , sounds like you need to put a 2nd gen axial in its place .
The post talked about how they change the geometry , the 2 joints no longer line up [ real pane in the *** for getting press in there ] and because of that all the weight is on the lower ball joint .
I do not remember where I read it , other wise I would link you to it .

Just for future info, what kind of cost are you looking at for the dealer/garage to do it if you are not doing them yourself.

I'm not going back to the dealer because they'd just replace them with what I had. I'm using a local garage whom I trust, with material and labor, drive out is $1,100.00. Thanks again, Dodge.

I did them for a friend last summer for $300 , he said that he found a shop to do for about $600 .
When I had my last shop , I remember doing a chev for about $700 , not including parts .
One of the issues is if you dig into that deep , saving future costs by doing axial seals & u-joints is something to take into consideration , anytime you open up something next to an other repair you may want to take advantage of being that deep into it .

it is not hard to drill them and install zirks. very viable option for those that have newer trucks.

That would be 3 years/36,000 miles, unless you buy an extended plan that would cover the ball joints.

is there a write up on this? it sounds like a great idea
i'd be concerned about getting metal shavings from drill or tapping the hole inside there

grease the drill bit to help with metal contamination. I have drilled them for years. remember grease good, water bad. the engineers forgot that.

I joined the club at 66k last year. I replaced u-joints, upper and lower ball joints, and hub bearings with Moog stuff.
