Is that a balancer of some sort on the rear driveshaft at the transfer case output? its round and looks like a vibration dampner. i still am getting vibrations at 100 km/hour but it comes and goes. coulod it be ujoints or this balancer thingy?

I know what you are talking about... I believe it is a harmonic balancer. I lost mine a while ago and didn't replace it. Can't tell the difference.

it is a balancer. i'm guessing to dampen driveline vibs and to help stabilize(using gyroscopic force) the tailshaft from the transfer case as it rotates (?)

Exactly. It's a damper that's used to reduce or eliminate normal powertrain harmonics. There's not much to it that can go wrong, unless it's cracked, or physically loose. Don't expect it to try to hide any large vibration from a failed part, like a u-joint. It just isn't possible.

When I shortend my driveshaft to install a gearvendors overdrive the driveshaft guy said you do not need this and when he was finished he gave me the front yoke the balancer and about 10" of the driveshaft that he cut off. I did not have any vibration problems before or after this was done.
