Bad Lift Pump?

I have the original and its behind the fuel filter housing(never made it in the tank ). Anyway I have just over 92K on the ticker and now when I start the truck and when I am cruising at low rpms, I hear what is like a vibration/buzz noise coming from the center of the dash. I checked in the dash and couldnt find anything! Is this thing on its way out? TIA

My 03 just started making a buzzing noise the other day. It sounds like it's coming fron the center of the dash as well. I only hear it when I shut down the truck. It buzzes for about 5-10 sec after the key is off.

MY lift pump went south and I went with the Glacier pump. You won't regret it. It's a great product and Richard is a easy guy to deal with. Just my $.02.

I've noticed mine doing this too. Is it the lift pump? What are all the options for replacement? Is it best to go with the tank mounted style?

You don't want to go to the "in-tank" pump unless you just have to and under warranty.

Most guys on this board are going to tell you to order an inline pump, such as the Walbro from GDP. FASS makes a great system too. Neither are cheap, but they both do a much better job than the stocker. If you plan on adding power modules/programmers etc....you will need to upgrade to a better pump anyway.

You really need a Fuel Pressure gauge to tell what your pump is doing, but I would say the stock lift pumps are the most common failure I read about regarding these trucks.

Yea, sounds like the Glacier lift pump is pretty popular. I will more than likely do the new pump next. I still have to do a little digging to find out which one to go with. Most are a little pricey.

Didn't your truck come with the in-tank pump? You can still upgrade to a glacier even if you have an 03 with the in-tank. Its the same kit as the 04.5 and up trucks.

Mine didn't have the intank pump. On the 03-04.5 trucks, the lift pump is mounted on the rear of the stock filter housing..................unless it has already been to the dealer for a retrofit to the intank kind.

If you order a GDP kit from Richard, it comes with an adapter that fits onto the back of the stock filter housing to replace the stock lift pump. If you have an 05 or later truck.....or one already retrofitted,,,,,,,,,you have to drop the fuel tank to remove it.

Texas, did you notice an increase in performance with the Glacier pump, or just better piece of mind? I have heard some say that the stock lift pump does not deliver enough fuel for some of the performance mods. Did you notice any change?

Mine dyno'd 466 hp with the stock lift pump. A couple of months later on a different dynojet dyno and after adding the GDP Walbro pump and 2 micron kit....it dyno'd 467.

Apparently the stock lift pump, at that power level, pushed enough fuel...barely.......for it not make a difference. My FP gauge was reading zero or close to it though. Now I can't pull it below 16 or 17psi with the GDP pump.

If I added some more power adders to my truck, im sure the stocker would not have kept up. But regardless, it was to low for comfort to me. And, I know they are a common failure on our trucks,,,,,,,,,,,,so I replaced it before it had the chance to fail. Pushing 2 micron filtered fuel is alot better for the injectors too.
