Auto trans hunting for gears at low speeds.

My 06 automatic is jumping between first and second at slow acceleration around 12-15 mph. I have taken it to the dealer twice. the first time they hooked it up to the computer and told me that i needed a new govenor sensor and a pressure transducer. They changed this out and filled it with new fluid. It seemed to have fixed the problem. But then a week later it started again. I took it back to the same dealer and the tech drove it and said it felt the same as before. They ran the test and found the same thing but they talked to chrysler and they said that the reason it is hunting the gears is because the trans has learned my driving patterns and is having trouble deciding what gear to be in. As you can see this has been a long ordeal and i am still not satisfied. . By the way i had to pay for the repairs because i have46,000 miles but they did refund my money after the second visit.

Has anyone else had this problem.

Mine does the exact same thing.
Never seems to know what gear it wants to be in and frequently shifts rough. On the positive side, the tranny does shift much smoother and in a more normal fashion when I have my 4k trailer attached. I guess the tranny is only designed for towing....

I think it's pretty common. Mine does it too and only unloaded. I've found using more throttle and Tow/Haul mode will help it decide a little better.

X2. Mine does it to. Slow moving traffic is horrible. Use the Tow/Haul or even pull it down into 1st or 2nd to hold the gear. Somedays I wish i had a 6-speed. But most days I'm glad I have an auto. Can't have everything i guess.

I am going soon to have mine checked to. My problem is around here alot of curvy hilly roads and it want go in overdrive till 50mph and most of the time I am at 2k rpms driving 45. My fuel milaige is like crap. It changes gears way to much and with any slight move of the throttle. If they could get my od to kick in about 40mph and set my throttle response not to change gears until over half throttle I would be very happy.

mine did it and i kept saying it was not right. after several trips to the dealer and them telling me that it was a normal condition i finally got a tech to agree it was not right. they kept it for a month and one day to replace the entire third member and transfer case, they felt that something was binding. after all that it still did it so then they put in a new valve body saying it was sticking and causing it to shift up and down between 1st and 2nd. it is better now but i have just decided that this tranny just shifts different than any other tranny i've had. i don't know if this helps you but just thought i'd let you know you're not hte only one with this issue.

I would think youd be lugging the engine too much in od at 40 mph.Mine kicks to od around 45mph and its luging slightly....if Im gonna run 45 to 50 mph I switch my od off.. Rooster

I guess I am still in the learning curve. I came from a 6 speed and I ran in 6th at those speeds with no problems. I also had alot better fuel miliage. I still think it is crazy to be running 2k rpms at 40 to 45 mph.

thanks for the replies. Im glad to see that i am not the only one with the problem. My opinion on the matter is that if our transmissions are doing this then all of them should do it. In my experience this does not happen. My dad has a truck identical to mine and he has about 5K more miles on his and has never had this problem. I think I am going to call the customer support line at chrysler and ask some more questions. The problem seems to me that the transmission controller needs to have different parameters set to tell it when to up and downshift. the current ones are to narrow of a range in rpms.

ROC155 has it right. I was having the problem of "hunting" between 1st & 2nd gear (16,000 miles on truck). The dealer replaced the valve body - problem resolved.

Mine will do it when the transmission is cold and if I just feather the accelerator. Otherwise it's fine.

Thats my problem again if the feather the throttle it goes gear crazy. My mom has a old 94 topaz and it changes like I want my truck to. It want come out of a gear unless you slow way down or give 3/4 throttle. Today I was able to drive faster and stay above 50 and the thing worked great but slow down to around 45 and the thing goes into a panic. Dang I know I am use to a 6 speed but there has to be some way to set the tranny up better.

My problem exactly. hence:

I've never had a problem in the lower gears, although sometimes it feels as if I'm driving a CVT.

Get a shift kit installed. Holds tranny in gear longer and shifts at higher RPM. Had one in my '98 - it helped a bit, but not enough to get another slushbox.
