Auto Tranny ?

So I loaded the dodge up with 20 bales of hay. I put the tranny in the tow haul mode and my speed was 45ish at 2500 rpm I said the hell with that and put O.D. back on and was cruising at 70 at 2000 rpm. It never shifted out of O.D. and that was going up an 8% grade. Now If i continue to do this will it damage the tranny. I had a 97 dodge V10 that I would have to take O.D. out because it would hunt for gears. I'm new to this tranny and engine and not sure if what I did was ok.

Thanks for the help
Travis

True tow/haul only changes the shift points and overdrive still functions.Yours is turning OFF overdrive. Its a O/D off.Why some built like this say tow/haul I don't know. 05 model year has tow.haul and NO o/d off.

I do the same thing and see no high egts or trans temps. My rule is I'll drop it out of OD when it can't accelerate with the pedal right on the kick-down spring (about 3/4's of wide open).

In my '04 it's called tow/haul, but is actually OD off. I've heard the newer ones stay in OD even when in tow/haul, or something like that.

Its software. For years it was called O/D off.The 05s its a up its a true tow/haul. There is a flash fior 05s to eaither have it o/d off or tow haul.I think 06 up you can have it both ways.Tow haul electronicaly makes differant uase of the valves in the vale body.Hold the gear longer, faster torgue convertor lock up(less heat made) and O/D of is just that.It locks out 4th gear.Maybe factory a little premature on 04.5s with these saying T/H when they are only o/d off.O/D OFF has been around since 1990 I believe. When ever the first 4 speed autos started being used.

You should have no problem at all in OD. The only time I lock OD out is pulling a good size grade and that has only been once because my speed was low due to following a slow FORD. If you start to lug the engine you should hit OD lockout. No big deal, tranny will be fine.

Yes the 2006 do have Tow/Haul and OD Off. Its nice to have the Tow/Haul option as it changes the shift points and it also locks the TC in 2 and 3 gear where is does not do so in OD. I have yet to see a need to use OD off so I guess I don't tow heavy enough to need it.

As long as the trans isn't hunting for gears keep it in OD. When you hit a hill and your speed drops to 52 or there abouts, drop it out of OD until you get to the top and then go back to OD. This makes it operate like a two speed axle, keeps engine RPM up as well as speed and keeps from adding extra heat to the trans. I'm running an o3 with a 48RE. Works great.
