ATS Transmission Upgrade
I have an 06 2500 5.9 Cummins with the lovely 48re in it . I am already installing air bags and have the Edge w/attitude, 2 piece ATS exhaust manifold, and cold air intake. I am looking at towing a 5th wheel with the following specs Dry Hitch - 2808lbs, Dry Gross Weight - 13772lbs, GVRW - 18000lbs. Do you recommend swapping out the stock tranny for an ATS to handle this kind of weight? I know the Cummins can handle it, just not sure about the transmission. Thanks and remember to roll coal on all Pruis!!!!

I just picked up a fiver about that size, and will run my stock tranny until it fails. IMHO 3.73's with that weight is not ideal - the factory max tow package for the 3500's on stock tires used 4.10's. I'm running 4.56's with 35-inch tires.
We also own a Prius but I won't roll coal on it

We had a guy that use to haul with us that had an '05 (dually not single wheel) with an auto and 3.73's and never had an issue pulling our 26k lbs gross weight loads. My '03 pulled the loads with no problem........but I have 3.73's with the nv5600!!!

I think you are making a great choice Sir!
I also have a 2006 Dodge CTD CR 4X4 with the 48RE and installed my Stage VI ATS Tranny when my truck had about 4,000 miles on it. I now have almost 160,000 miles on it with absolutely NO PROBLEMS at all with my ATS Tranny. I tow my 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve behind my 06' and always at about 10,000 lbs. The truck has never had one issue at anytime hauling that type of load and that is regularly running the I-77 corridor between Charlotte, NC and Charleston, WV where there are several 4-6% grades.

I have an 06 Quad Cab with an ATS Stage one and pull a 13,000 lb 5th wheel with it no problem. I would not change the stock trans until you have problems with it.

m2fsr,
I also have about the same setup you do with truck and trailer (toy hauler). After towing for 3 years with the stock transmission, I did research and upgraded to a Goerend 48RE. I also knew I would be upgrading the engine and that transmission would be able to handle the additional HP and torque.
