another smoking question

have a bone stock '05. 2000 miles on it and i have taken it easy since the day i took it out of the dealership. today is in the 80's with a bit of humidity and while driving i got on it hard and left a stream of black smoke.

first time i have seen the smoke and did not know what to think. how about some input from you diesel heads.

normal, not normal?

thanks,
david in socal

Sounds fairly normal, just extra fuel not being burned. If the milage hasn't gone down and it runs fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Just enjoy being able to smoke out the person behind you.

Sounds like you have not had your foot in it. Don't baby it. Drive it the same way new as you will when it has 75,000 on it. The Cummins comes ready to work, ready to play. Rings will seat better when cylinder pressure is raised. Break in requirements are......wait, there arent any. Too bad the rear axle (AAM) was not designed the same.

If I take it easy on mine for awhile and then get on it, I get some black smoke. I figure it is just cleaning itself out, and blowing soot out of the cat, muffler and exhaust pipe.
