Another gear?

One of my close friends has a 06 3500 dually. Ive ridin in it a few times and i like it pretty good. His truck has 3.73s. IMO these trucks would greatly benefit from another gear. I'd hate to have one with 4.10s Any body else have the same opinion? IIRC his truck is turnin about 2000 or so rpms cruisin at about 60 or so. Does this sound right?

I think most members here who have the G-56 6 speed would agree that it is geared way to low for NON-pulling situations. It could use a 7th gear on the highway for sure.

It's definately a stump puller. Im glad I have the 48RE since most of my driving is highway at 70-75ish turning around 1900-2000 rpms.

I have an '06 g56-equipped 2500, and yes, those trucks really could use a 7th gear. Or, since 1st gear is RIDICULOUSLY low, maybe a 3.23 or so rear end ratio, allowing you to use 1st as a semi-normal gear to get heavy loads moving easily while still having lower rpm in 6th.

Thumbs up RPM's

I vote for 3.55's and 315's
Wish I had a nickel for every time I tried to shift from 6th - 7th!

I agree. I don't have 315's, but I sure love my 3.55's. They're ideal even when pulling heavy. I can't imagine having 4.10's.

1st gear IS ridiculously low The guy i was talkin about hauls cattle for a living, so he does a lot of pulling with it. It just seems like it should really have a 7th gear. I think they would have been better off to keep the 3.55's. I cant imagine 4.10s. It would be a pullin SOB tho.

G-56 and 4.10s, pull anything to 70mph redline. Wonder what Dorf does with 4.30s?

A coworker recently put a splitter in his 2nd Gen CTD 3500 dually with 4.10s. Says he picked up a couple of MPGs on the highway. Anyone tried that in their 3rd gen?

How a bout a 3 speed rear axle? 4.10's to move mountains, 3.73's for the mole hills and 2.72's to get home on time for supper.

Glad i'm not the only one! I've had this truck for over two years and I still often try for a 7th... Maybe in the future when I finally get tires for the 22.5's i'll be glad I have the 4.10's. Just if I can get ahead enough to get them ordered...

Thats the reason the G-56 only comes with the 3.73. The gearing is so much lower, the net result "IS" right around 4.10. A seventh would be sweet, but unlike the others, I "do" regularly use my 1st gear to get myself rolling. When you have 2 and a quarter tons of wet topsoil in the bed, you can start in 2nd, but you can "feel" the life slipping off the clutch plates. Granny gear, on the other hand, goes "Pop, ooops I'm at the redline again".
I just wish someone would make an "affordable" overdrive transfer case. I guess you just can't have it both ways !!!!!

Im looking into a gear vendors setup which gives you effectively 11 speeds I believe, including a double overdrive at .54:1. That would definitely be sweet!
