Another engine knock question
I had the same knock and the same answer from the dealer.. Their quote was "there is a knock but you have plenty of warranty left and the truck will not leave you stranded so there is nothing more we can do for you" They had the truck 4 days and had the DC tech come to the dealer to look at it.
I ran a tank with lucas mixed it and it didn't hep much. After reading this forum I tried PS. I put the Double dose (1/2 bottle, According to the bottle this is for injector cleaning) and after 2 tanks the truck is quiet as new.
Pretty low miles on the truck... only 3700 miles so far..

Well it all started with the "knock" then the "tick" resulting in a new block and now they tell me I need 11 new lifters
. What the F is going on with these engines? I am very **** about how my truck is driven and cared for. Maybe I should just drive it like I stole it.

Update
Just got word from service writer that they are changing one injector. I'll found out tommorrow if it is fixed (the noise) when I pickup the truck as they could not get the injector today.

Hey All,
My 04 has the ball ping hammer noise as well. it started around 21,000 and only does it once the motor is up to temp (about 15 minutes of running). Doesn't do it going down the road except when there is a load under 1200rpm or so.
The noise is more pronouces letting the cluch out from a complete stop in 2nd gear right when the cluch is ingauging and just starting to move the truck. As soon as the inital load is gone, so is the noise.
I ran Delo for the first 12,000 miles. Switched to Shafters (spelling) for a change for winter startup then back to Delo this with summer. The Ticking started when I went back to Delo after 2,000 miles or so. I'm not sure if Delo is the cause, but I went back to shafers yesterday and time will tell.
I will state the noise just came out of the blue one day it was just there. I would have sworn it was a due to bad fuel, but it has been lingering on for about 5 tanks now...
I'll let you know if going back to shafer's oil cleard things up.

picked up truck on friday. first impression some what better( no ball peen hammer sound
). Injector #3 was changed. Went on road trip, Calgary to St. Paul(~140kms NE of Edmonton)about 500km total. On the way back 50km east of Edmonton truck dies while doing 115km/hr on highway
at 10:15pm sunday night. truck will not restart. call road side assistance. they can't locate tow truck big enough to take family(4 people) and truck to edmonton.
they tell me to call cab and file claim with DC.
.Get family to motel $135.00for the night, cab ride $110.00. Tow truck finally arrives at 1am. not a flat bed
, driver has to disconnect rear shaft,towed to dealer in edm 2:30am. call edm dealer can't get truck in until 10:30am
. Edm dealer trying to be as helpful as possible. Sat at dealer with family for about 4hrs. Talked to diesel mechanic, lift pump died, new in tank pump installed,ecm flashed for new pump. Tells me needs injector #4 72%.
but truck will get me back to Calgary. Call Calgary dealer make appointment tell them to pre order injector. can't do unless they verify injector

Have about 1000 miles on the Shafers Oil change and I have not heard the ball ping hammer noise once since switching back. I've even tried to reproduce the noice by loading up the motor with my foot on the brake when letting out the cluch....no noise. Looks like my noise was being caused by the delo oil...........
03 with bad engine, what will work?
Ok i have a 2003 Dodge that was involved in an accident, oil pan was crushed. Lost all of oil before truck was shut off and bunrt mains out of engine. Crank is shot, mails are blued on crank, rods and rod bearings are fine. I am thinking of trying to fix what i have, but it may cost me more in the long run. Has anyone ever put a crankshaft in a Cummins and had good luck out of it? I called some salvage yards and they said the engine was 2003 only. Won't a pre 04.5 work? What would be different. All replies will be appreciated becuse i am on a tight budget to get truck running. Thanks
Its called doing a crank kit , bearings rods & mains , seals & crank , but you need to make sure that the connecting rods are good , if you know & know how to use plasitagauge [ miss spelled ] small wax strings for checking bearing clearance , and have built a few engines then go ahead , but if you are not familiar , have a shop do it for you , the problem is that few shops are doing this kind of work anymore .
Theres lots of different things that can cause a knock on these engines, the late models are more prone to gear backlash on the cam gears because they went to a straight tooth gear. Mine had a denfinite knock at the front of the engine, only noticeable at idle and when the oil was hot. I pulled the cp3 drive gear loose and rotated everything until I hit a sweet spot and now no more noise, that was 6 months ago. Dodge also has a TSB addressing this except they say to change out the gears.
Bad injectors can also definitely make an engine sound like its coming apart. FYI the factory fuel filter is marginal at best for keeping the fuel clean enough for 20,000psi+ fuel systems. GM had a rash of failures before they went to a 2 micron fuel filter, havent heard much about Dmax injector problems since then.
