Is this all Cummins has?
Re:Is this all Cummins has?
:'(<br>yep that's all there is.<br> My complaint to the dealer was that the truck is low on power while towing. In fact my<br>Chevy 4.3L towed almost as well as my new Dodge.<br>Just got back from the dealership after doing a test tow with a 48 hundred pound trailer. The performance was awful the service rep hooked up the computer and came along for the ride. Everything was working with in the defined specs of the ecu computer. At least he got to see how poorly the truck was handling the weight and agreed that it was less than it should be. He admitted that the new 03 do not have the power or the acceleration of 02. He has taken several of the 03 out while hooked up to the data stream and compared the Acceleration times to the 02<br>He also told me that the 47 transmissions in the 03 have an anti hunting feature similar to the tow haul mode found in the Chevy. However in the Chrysler it is fully automatic with no override. Some trucks have been having problems with this new feature and not downshifting properly.<br>For now I must wait until Chrysler comes up with a new program for the engine and Trany. The good news I talked to the guys at DB and they should have their box out within a month that will give the 03 50 more horses with the 47 transmission. The price will be about $800 Canadian ouch. <br> I am not impressed.<br>
Re:Is this all Cummins has?
Man, I think I'm going to stick with my 99. I drove the 03 and just was not that impressed. It was a six speed 3500 4x4 loaded but I think my 99 will out accelerate it. All I have is the EZ on my 99.
Re:Is this all Cummins has?
Aye yaye yie... :'(<br><br>If you guys are into acceleration wars...I would be looking for a gasser.<br><br>Acceleration may be down but torque (which is what a diesel and the towing guy is looking for) is way up.<br><br>Horsepower is way up too. But with 305hp pushing around my 6700 pound 2500 4x4 RCLB Slt I wouldnt expect rice rocket accleration. I think the quad cab short boxes weight a little more then my rig and the dually is around 7500 pounds.<br><br>That can explain the lack of acceleration times and milages compared to the 02 truck which weighed less. Has nothing to do with engine performace and more to do with the weight the engine is constantly pushing around.<br><br>Personally I like the fact the truck is 6700 pounds (weighs in more than the competition and about the same as my trailer which gives me a little more towing security), has the huge torque numbers to get the load moving and weight to push it around, has the ride and comfort of a more refined car (even for a regular cab), and if you are quick with the clutch and stick can swiftly pull away from traffic lights even ahead of traffic.<br><br> ;D<br><br>Sounds like some of you guys need a Furd F350 V10 with the bolt on eaton whipplecharger. Those guys are making 525hp and 700ftLB of torque and getting 10-12 mpg it seems. They also claim they like dusting CTDs.<br><br>
<br><br>
<br><br>
Re:Is this all Cummins has?
One more thing...<br><br>Do ya'll realize that towing 20,000 pounds effectively puts you 7000 pounds (the wieght of the truck and passengers) = 7000lbs overweight (that is close to 50% overweight guys). <br><br>I belive the computer in these new Cummins engines can sense load and actually cut back on fuel/power. My Chevy use to do that if I was hard on the throttle for extended periods of time actually forcing you to take the next lowest gear to get power back and cool the exhaust temperatures.<br><br>IE: Pyrometer temperature goes up, engine senses too much load and cuts fuel to preserve the engine internals which also cuts power...may be something to look into with the PCM program and your overweight trucks. There has been rumor on this board that the 03 CTD has a plithera of new tampering and self preservation features...this may be one of them.<br><br>
Re:Is this all Cummins has?
I wouldnt doubt your old truck pulled fine. With the mechanical system running the engine you could overload it as much as you wanted.<br><br>Then new Rig's CTD is computer controlled. I would think it is savy to it's temperatures, fuel consumption, loading and especially vehicle weight limits and actually recalibrating to protect itself from overuse.<br><br>I doubt it was Cummins limiting the weight and more than likely DC limiting the ability to pull based on SAFE and RATED pulling factors investigated during the design process.<br><br>Just a recommendation: Sounds like you need a Freightliner quad cab bob tail for your pulling needs.
Re:Is this all Cummins has?
I have driven diesel vehicles most of my adult life(I am much closer to 50 than I am 40
). I know they do not have the acceleration of a gas engine.
However I do expect a vehicle rated to tow 11 thousand pounds to be able to maintain the speed limit going up a small hill towing 48 hundred pounds and maintain a speed limit of 45 miles an hour without having to put the peddle to the floor. :'( or to downshift manually with an automatic transmission.
The horsepower increase and torque increase should be more than enough to offset the slight weight increase between the 02 in the 03.
Once more people start towing with an 03 standard output 47 automatic with the 3:73 gears Chrysler is going to be inundated with complaints. And if they don't get their act together they are going to lose alot of sales.
By the way I am only getting between 12 and 13 mpg on winter fuel around town no towing.

<br><br>Nope, converteddzlr, there were two. I got the other one!<br><br>[/quote]<br><br>Make that three, I like mine so far! All I pull is a 5000 lb travel trailer, but it pulls it with ease, and I know I could pull alot more.
Gee, sounds like I must've gotten the only good SO/47RE that was ever made!
Re:Is this all Cummins has?
Mopar you are wrong.
"The standard Cummins Turbo Diesel, which also employs high-pressure, common rail injection, boosts its horsepower rating to an impressive 250 horsepower at 2,900 rpm (up from 235 horsepower at 2,700 rpm) and produces an equally impressive 460 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,400 rpm.

I am really happy for all you guys that do not have any problems with your new trucks. Believe me I wish I was one of you. However I am not. My issue with the truck are ligit and I am working with my dealer to get things right as I still love this truck It just does not tow as well as it should on hills.
