AFE and dust?????

Hey guys,

I took the afe filter sock off today to clean it, and took the filter off to take a look at it and noticed a very small amount of dust in the intake tube, it has been 15,000 since I last looked at it, is this a problem is it normal? Will this cause any damage. 15,000 miles ago I switched to the pro-guard 7 filter, with sock on the stage 2 intake system, for about a month I ran the standard filter in the stage 2, thats the one that it came with, I had to order the pro-guard 7 seperate, so maybe the dust came from the original filter I had on the system, anyone had problems with dust with their pro-guard 7? How will I know if any damage is done?

Also I took the piece of rubber out from beside the passenger side radiator, will this cause any harm, I noticed streaks from where a little water/rain had gotten on the sock.

Water is supposed to "bead-up" on the pre-filter (sock) & drain off. Don't know if it actually does do it, though.

If you haven't done an oil change, yet, you may want to get an oil analysis done. Have them check the "silicon" level. That's the dirt that can get past your air filter.

I have the PG-7 on my '03 & the silicon levels on the last two changes were at 4 & 5. That's about what you'dd expect from a stock paper element filter. Each oil change was done at about 8000 miles.

You may want to put some grease around the filters seal, also, incase that's where dirt is leaking into your intake.

Good Luck.

If you have ANY noticable dirt in the intake tube then your filter isn't working good enough, or there is a leak. That tube should be squeaky clean inside. I'll second getting the oil checked, and change it anyway. Can't hurt.

I'll 3rd it-fix or replace that air filter setup. ANY dirt in there is unacceptable.

Something similar....If you almost finished eating a club sandwhich and noticed a small mouse turd spread on the bread, would that be a problem ?

Was your AFE filter media properly oil and the correct oil used? If you are in areas with very fine dust or silt (Alaska or West Texas, done both of these) can get through improperly oiled cotton gauze media. Personally I prefer foam air filter, being an old desert enduro rider. I have not seen any dust in the downstream side of the intake from the filter since going to a TruFlow oiled foam filter. An oil analysis will give you piece of mind or confirm your worst fears, I highly recommend doing one, it's a cheap checkup on your engines "health". Good luck!

As far as any damage goes your fine. My stock airbox was not locked properly and I did not catch it for 2-3K miles. That was 175K miles ago.

And my truck has more power today than when I bought it.

Just drive.

I wonder if the Smarty has anything to do with that?

Gieco is probably right if there was just a little dust on the intake tube. But what can it hurt to have an oil analysis. Heck you may be able to extend you oil changes and actually save money.

How often does the pro-guard 7 filter need oiling, I have had mine in for about 10,000 and have done nothing to it. Should I oil it? Could that be were the dust is coming from?

Sounds like the filter may be a little light on oil. If you have the original maintenance instructions it should tell you how to clean and reoil the filter media. If I recall correctly from the days I had one it states spray the oil on the filter media until you have a uniform color. If you have some light spots just hit it again with the oil. Good luck!

From: 20 ' in the air on my crf450
I have found that if I ride my dirt bike with oiled sponge filters in very dust conditions there are types of silt, dirt, whatever that can bypass the most well oiled filter. And when I used to have a performance blown small block chevy in the fall here in Va. ( with K&N )there would be a small amount of dust on the air cleaner lid. I went back ot the pleated paper filter and saved the problems associated with all the oiled units. I also think ( imo ) that dirt can absorb the oil to some degree and therefore lessen the effectivness of the filter. But after all this Im still interested in trying the K&N filter on the crf450. I want to see how well it works. I am talking over 10 years ago when I had the oil type filters on my vehicles though things could have changed.

Geez, I drove home from the track with the air filter half off last night....no critters in the intake...no dust either. I figure that if it wasn't dusty....the bugs were getting pretty well incinerated at 1700 egts. ks
