5.9 with blow by

my dad just bought a 2007 with a 5.9 in it and it has alot of blow by he was wondering what all he should do to it? buy a new short block? or new pistons and rings in his block? have the head checked? any thing else? when he bought it he was told it used a quart of oil ever 2-3000 miles. when he pulled the breather it looked worse than a quart per2-3000 miles. any help[ would be appreciated, thanks.

I've fixed a motor with extreme blowby by changing a $2 pcv valve. Blowby can be caused by a lot of things. Some simple, some not. Don't buy anything until a few things are checked. 1st, an engine has to breath. Where is the oil dumping out from? Where/who did he buy it from? Was anything checked or promised during the sale?

Good possiblilty it has a few broken top rings. Run a compression test. You'll have to tear the motor down to see exactly how bad it is.

blowby in a 2002 5.9

I have a 2002 and recently had the injector pump rebuilt and the truck runs better than it ever did before...however I now have a lot of blowby from the vent tube. The tube has been lengethened so the oil exits below the engine instead of the center of the radiator. A compression test showed good all around and when I change the oil it stays clean for 3000 miles before even starting to color so all my mechanic buds say the engine is in great shape but they have no idea why the excessive blowby. Any thoughts?
