4x4 engaging it self at will.
The other nite my wife and 4 month old son and I where out for drive and happen to be going past the dealer I bought my new to me 06 Mega cab from 2 weeks ago. We where gona pull inot the lot and look at the new 08s thay just got in and as I was doing so the 4wd engaged and the truck started hopping going around the corner. I stopped and played with the **** and tryed going forward and back and shutting the truck off and everything. It would go in and out of 4wd at will. There was no rime or reason to it. abought every 5 seconds you would hear the actuator trying to engadge or disengage the Tcase. It was enagaging and disengaging abought as fast as it could and noting I did made a ounce of diference. There was no way I was driving it 20 miles back home on dry pavement in 4wd but I had my wife and babay with. I would up finding the name of one of the salesmen in the phonebook and called him at home. He came down to the lot and gave me a mini.....errrr I mean MAN VAN to drive. they have been working on it for 2 days now and last I knew they still had no clue what was wrong. Does anyone have any ideas or have had this happen to them in the past?
Closest thing I could find is this TSB for a reflash and such. May be the switch as well. I know the TCCM can get confused if the switch is "jacked around" from 2-4-2-n-4-2 , you know? They need to have a selection chosen and then wait for that selection to complete before changing again. Otherwise, it does similar to what you are describing, trying to complete all the previous selections. Hope this helps!? I know it says for light duty pickups, but maybe the symptoms and TCCM are similar?

Module (TIPM)
2006 (DR) Dodge Ram Light Duty 4x4 Pick Up Truck
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a NV246
transfer case (sales code DH8) built from February 9, 2005 through
September 7, 2005 (MDH 020910 through 090708).
The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) on about 135 of the above vehicles
contains an incorrect calibration that may inadvertently cause the transfer case to
default into neutral and allow unintended movement of the vehicle. If this occurs and
the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle could roll away with the transmission in
the Park position and cause a crash without warning.
The TIPM must be reprogrammed (flashed).
Models
IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle
inventory. Federal law requires you to complete this recall service on these
vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to
apply to used vehicle inventory and should perform this recall on vehicles in for
service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

My truck wouldn't disengage out of 4x4 and it ended up being the sensor down on the shift motor. What I would do is when this is happening unplug the switch behind the dash to see if it stops. If it does it could be the switch itself. If not it could be the sensor on the motor or there is also a transfer case control module under the dash on the far left side. Its a blue box about 3X5 inches. On my '03 I could see it if I took off the small access panel on the left side of the dash when the door is open. I also have heard of wiring harnesses rubbing on driveshafts and wearing into the wires. Good luck!
Got a similar problem with my 06 mega... It does not engage by itself, but if I engage it and switch back to 2wd, it will not come out of 4wd until I put it in neutral and then back in drive. Going to the dealership next week with my laundry list of problems.
Well for the record I am glad i decided not to get into the mechanical carer I went to colledge for. I graduated 10 years ago from tech school and things have changed a LOT in that time. Ya may wana sit down for this one. I got it back today finaly. Its not fixed 100% for sure but they think they have it so I am to drive it for a while with the theoreticaly defective part buypassed to see if it still acts up or not. When I asked if it was a sensor they said yes. I asked if it was the one on the T case. They said no. It was a air conditioning sensor. I dont see how that has anything to do with the 4wd but they swear that they both are routed threw some board or power distibution point of some sort that is causing the isue. I dont know what this world is coming to when the 4wd and th eAC are some how linked together on a vehicle to where the AC acting up can cause the 4wd to go bazerk but apearently thats where we are at. Oh well. They buypassed the sensor in the AC system for now and are waiting to see if that fixes the problem before they swich out the sensor for a new one.
