I have the 04 and the transmission shifts like poop going to get onto the freeway and stand on the go pedal and it just shifts right thru the gears never builds up any go... are these things shift points programmed from factory for towing ? and how do we go about getting the shift points changed, I dont tow anything,

Push the TOW/HAUL button in and make sure it's warmup up good.
But from what you said it all sounds NORMAL

I think what SLICE is describing could be considered normal for our trucks but I definatley think that DC could spend al ot more time computer tuning all their vehicles. I feel that my truck definatley short shifts sometimes. I mean if you are accelerating a little bit and let off the throttle a tiny bit and then get harder into it, the trans will already be upshifting. Sometimes I get the impression that the ECM is confused about what gear it should be in. If you slow down for a sharp turn but don't go below about 3-5 mph, the trans will take a second to decide which gear to go into. I think that most times it should go into first but it goes into second instead and really seems slow to respond. I think the mapping for the trans could definatley use some fine tuning. If I shift manually and use the Tow/Haul button, I feel I can get the trans to have a much smoother pattern, but thats a lot of work in city traffic. My truck only has 1800 miles on it so I'm waiting until 3000 to take it in for the first oil change and get the new reflash. Well see if that makes any difference.

So what RPM is it upshifting at wide open? I would think it should be close to 3 grand or a few hundred under.....

Sounds like you may want to trade for a Hemi , that is if you like winding it up.

Mine just blows through the gears and feels strong and I'm up and running in no time, very quick. RPM's look excellent too. Have not experienced anything wierd. No hesitation, surges or anything. Flat out moves. Hope I didn't jinks myself with the reply.....

Unless you're wide open, the torque converter locks too early when getting on the highway. Mine seems to lock at 50mph, and it drops the engine to quite a low/lugging rpm. I think these points are annoying as well, and wish it would engage above 60 or something so you had some room to build up power in the last gear before it locks..

Get the mileage reflash. It made a difference in how my tranny shifted, and the lock-up is now smoooooth

My only complaint is with the TC slippage. It seems excessive to me. Too much revving without going anywhere. With all that torque available, less clutch action should be necessary - just enough to safely get you from gear to gear IMHO.

My Ford 4R100 shifted much better after my PPPIII programmer upped the line pressure to the tranny. Can something like that be done to the 48RE to firm up the shifts?
