48RE Trans slipping on incline

Truck has 100K 3 trans oil/filter changes. When towing buddies 15K boat out on 35/40 degree incline in 4 Hi the truck would barley move and the rps went very high until it would move. We had to put it back in the water to reset boat on trailer and I tried 4 Lo and it walked the boat right out. What gives?

I think it has to do with the stall speed of our crappy torque converters. I have had similar results with my 5th wheel (only about 10k) when putting it away in my driveway going up curbs, etc. when in HI. Now, I simply pop it into 4LO and it doesn't even blink at moving it over anything.

FYI my torque converter started leaking ( not slipping) so I pulled the trigger on a Goerend transmission just before June this year. The it was like a new truck now except it has 102k on the ticker. The transmission knows exactly what to do even downhill w/cruise doesn't surge. The torque converter was going to cost around $1000 and the tranny was $4800 but 3yr 100,000 mile warranty. Nothing worse than a wimpy transmission. Just thought I would throw it out for you.

I use 4LO on my 13k boat trailer. It's just easier on everything. Why would you use 4hi?

15K pounds from a dead stop up a boat ramp is alot to get moving. Mine revs up alot pulling my 10K pound boat up the ramp.....I usually just pop her in 4Lo and crawl it out with no issues. Sounds pretty normal to me with stock torque convertor.

Thanks for the replies. How would a 2WD truck pull a static load of 14-15K on incline w/o 4Lo?

I would assume just like your truck does now in 4Hi. It would rev up and slowly get the load moving. Obviously gear ratio will play a roll too. 4.10's will pull it out better than 3.73's. I feel the biggest issue is the stock convertor slips alot. My brother's truck is identical to mine except he has a built trans with triple disk convertor and he pulls the boat out in 2 Hi alot better than mine. Our ramp in Ocean City Maryland is steep....almost all boat owners with 10K and up boats use 4 Lo if they have it. You can definitly tell when Nick is hooked to her in 2 Hi with his 5 inch MBRP exhaust.....very loud.

You could pull it out in 2, or 4hi, but why WOULD you? You pay extra to haul that 4x4 junk around all the time, why not use it?
