48RE Shifting poorly
48RE Shifting poorly
On the drive to work my trans began acting oddly.
It seemed to stick in 2nd gear - rev'd up to 3,000 and would not kick up. I played with the shift lever, varied my speed from 30 - 50 mph and got generally concerned. By the time I'd limped to the coffee shop the temp was just over 100F. Somehow I'd gotten it to shift 2-3 and 3-4 a few times but it was very sloppy.
After stopping and pulling out onto the highway the temp had climbed to aound 135 and the shifting was still not firm, but it shifted.
Any ideas? I was planning on towing a FW next weekend and now I'm worried about going anywhere until I figure this out. I'll check fluid level tonight after work.
oh yes, 22,000 miles filter/fluid changed at 20,000, and it's never done this before.

From the other thread, the TSB quoted doesn't apply to me I think?
Maybe chafing on a wiring harness could be...
I'm kinda bummed about this so I ran out a lunch to test the truck again. It shifted fine now.
Looks intermittant. Wet/chafed wires could do that - could the transducer or solenoid do that?
I dread getting the dealer to do another warrany item. The last one was a fiasco.

Well...
It's shifting fine again. I crawled underneath and didn't see any obvious chafing of wires. I'm not sure what else I can check. Guess I wait until it starts acting up again - hopefully never, but that doesn't seem likely.

I did my own gauge install. I had to get someone to braze a fitting for me, but I did the rest myself.
No, I'm not battling with Oasis, they're a little north of me. I tried to shop them when I bought this truck but they shot themselves in the foot. I was doing the on-line shopping thing, then talked to someone in internet sales there. But when I went to schedule a test drive they had to 'fess up that none of the CTD's on their web site were actually on their lot yet...

I had a 47Re that was showing those same symptoms ,intermittently and it was a corroded battery cable, replaced the cable.prpblem solved. I don't know if this would apply to a 48re. I haven't had any problems with my 48Re
I can sure check my battery cables easily.
Today I finally had a chance to check the fluid with the trans good and hot, 175ish...
I'm actually a little over full and the dipstick has a warning about that. I guess I'll wait for it to cool down and let a half pint or so drain out.
Any ideas what overfull will do? I swear it was OK when I topped it off (I heated it up then too...)
