Smile 48re rebuild, finally.

Well, I'm writing this more out of excitement then anything else. Had to share with someone who understands (family doesn't). Tranny finally gave up on me. Had paranoia on who to fix it right but I found just the guy in Marysville Wa. He builds all of Lenny Reeds trans.
Going with full street/strip tran. Billet input, custom tripledisk TQ and some other goodies. Should be done by Friday. Anyhow just had to vent some of my excitement to someone who understands.....

Yep new flex plate. Cost is give or take a couple a bucks about 5k... Hoping the BD valve body is still good. It wasn't a catastrophic failure so aside from no go in third. I'm hoping it's an easy rebuild for him. I'll give an update on drivability asap. I've been driving with an egg on the throttle for so long now it'll be weird to actually use the power for once.

At that price why not go with Goerend? Just wondering, not being a weenie or anything, but I would think you could get a well known Goerend trans that would have 100,000 mile warranty, lifetime triple disk, billet input, new VB, and include installation.

I just adjusted my front band for the last time, and I'm in the market now. When mine goes I'll need to get a new trans fast. So I want to be ready to do it chop-chop. That's why I ask how you made your decision. It's a lot of coin, so we all want to make the decision that lets us sleep at night!!!

Lost Lake,

I really have wanted a Georend but do to time constraints I needed it sooner then they could provide. At the quickest it would have been a two week turn around. I was aiming for being back on the road by the weekend of the 4th. My truck is also a daily driver, so I am borrowing wheels to get my self to and from work. Time was short to make a decision. I guess these things never happen when you have all the time in world....

I am very confident in this tranny shop, It may not be the best deal, but I am comfortable knowing I am getting a nice product.

Got the truck back last night. It drives awesome! Didn't realize how bad my tranny was slipping, my rpm's are actually a hundred higher when cruising. Truck feels like a it's got the pull of train now. Smooth with just the right firmness when shifting. It's great to feel it lock up now. Gotta go find something to load up my dump trailer with just so I can tow with it now!

You new trans has a higher RPM when cruising? If that is accurate, why is it that way. I went to Canada to get mine done and so far I am pretty happy.

I have no idea on the reason for the rpm change. I double checked my smarty controlled abs tire height setting. It is dead on accurate using our local speed radar signs. I am assuming it has to do with how bad the old tran would slip and hunt for gears.
Does anyone out there know why the Change in rpm's? No complaints, it is so much nicer to drive now. But I sure would like to know the reason for this.

I think the concern here is that if your RPMs are higher then that is idicative of a slipping transmission. I too find it odd that your RPMs are higher after the rebuild. Some how some ratios had to get changed to acheive that.

Yep, I am thinking tran guy must have changed ratio. On discussion with him I had asked for more of a towing set up. I't didn't cross my mind he would change ratio. My bill was exactly at his quote and I didn't see any parts for a gear change. He must have lumped it in with the cost of his basic tran rebuild price. I'll call him next week and ask. No, complaints about it, it offsets the bigger tires I have and brings the rpm's back to when I had 33's on it. I would say my truck is perfectly dialed in now.

Whoa Whoa Whoa.....

You can change gear ratios when you rebuild? That would be sweet for me because I'm running 35" tires and have 3.73 diffs. I'd like to raise my rpm's about 200 - 300!

Well, not sure on the actual reason for the rpm change, ratio change seems like a good possibility proposed by demaxeter. I won't know for sure till I talk to my tranny guy after the holiday.
I drove the truck all around today and it's like I never moved up in tire size. I have only had these 35's for about 2500 miles so I remember exactly what my truck used to cruise at. I am baffled, but I do know it runs sweet now and I would'nt change a thing.

So are you saying the rpm is higher during lockup at say 60 or are you saying it is higher when unlocked? If it is when it is unlocked then maybe it is a looser converter. When I was talking to DDP about a trans they were quoting me looser than stock on the converter.
