48re in heavy traffic is not fun
ok when im in heavy i dont like how my 48re is. when i let off the gas then traffic goes again it kicks up a gear right away and goes, yes that sounds normal but for it to do that like 300 times going home is very annoying......what can i do? sometimes if traffic is going and i let off the gas for a couple seconds it will skip around the 2nd to 3rd gear...there is no loud bangs or anything bad at all i checked the fluid it is perfect...is it the transmissions software that causes this??? really starting to get annoyed with this trans that i have been scared of since day one. a friend saw me with my new truck and the first thing he said when i told him it was a auto he says " whens that trans gonna drop on you.... :-X.... my response

honestly something that came to my mind just now is why couldnt ford build that 6.0 with no problems... :'(.............i love my cummins but dodges autos.....come on now >

Maybe you could select the gear manually that you want and just shift it manually until you are out of traffic.You decide what gear you want instead of it trying to upshift on you.I know you have the auto and now you are shifting manual but at least there is no clutch.

you might want to have that checked. I also spend time in heavy traffic at slow speeds and do not feel any shifting like you discribe.
dmdbit has a good suggestion, but then a trip to the shop may not hurt anything.

Is this your first truck with an auto??. from your description it sounds like the tranny is functioning like it is designed to. I only drive auto's and they all act similar( especially if you pay way too much attention to itor are a tad paranoid). In real bad stop and go every few feet I shift into first or second, no real reason just do. In response to your ford quip, the three guys I know with ford diesels are moving to dodges when they purchase next, one decided after driving mine empty around town for about 10 min. (he said there was no comparison, was gonna be a new dodge this fall). By the way the 48re has really surprised me with the way it performs in all aspects.

I believe I have what you have and tow about the same thing. Have had no problem with heat at 65-70 MPH running 3-4 hours at a hit. I don't think you will need the pan.

My 5er weighs in around 10000lb loaded. I've pulled it around 7000 miles including through the mountains in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. There has never been a heating problem at all. In my mind don't waste the bucks on it.

I sit in stinking traffic everyday also and my 47RE does the same thing. It's the traffic not the trans!! Every vehicle I've owned has done the same thing while sitting in traffic. A lot of it has to do with getting enough speed up for the trans to shift and then you slow down and the same point! The trans just doesn't know what to do. It seems like it's fishing for the right gear but will never find it while in gridlock. When I get tired of it I just shift manually as dmdbit and 1thom said. It's more fun that way anyways!!

There might be some shift kits coming out you can get too.
The only dodge auto I got to last under heavy use was one me and a ASE buddy rebuilt (really built up) ourself. Each clutch pack had extra clutch and steel plates installed. I used HQ bands.... basically every trick we could find out there for a 727 trans. We meticulosy assembled it fitted to the wisest tolerances. Ever chirp 36"'s going 1-2 shifting by itself and still have the trans last longer than the truck in MN road salt?

As of right now you have 2 choises, DC and AMSOIL. Don't let Jiffy Lube, Quaker State, Penzoil or any of the other ones tell you they can replace your Tranny fluid by useing ATF 3 and adding some typ of modifier to it. The stuff doesn't work well. If you really need to change the tranny fluid spend the money and get the AMSOIL and have DC put it in.

For what it's worth, on the pre 48RE trannies, one of the big mistakes people made was using the non DC fluid. Be it Amzoil synthetic or anything else.
Want long tranny life, use ONLY Dodge's fluid, nothing else.
