48RE Band Adjustment

Ok, so after doing some searching on here, I did not find anything about when you should do this adjustment. According to the service manual, Schedule A says to have it done at 100k miles. Schedule B says to have it done at 30k miles. I tend to follow the schedule A since I do not do any of the things under the schedule B (tow heavy, dusty conditions, excessive idling, etc).

My question is, when are you guys doing this adjustment? If I am not having ANY trouble at all with my tranny, should I even mess with it? Is this a routine maintenance item?

I had the 2-3 shift hunting going on until the dealer replaced my solenoid. Now, shifts like it is supposed to. Please give advice on when you recommend to do this adjustment.

Yeah, if you are truly a schedule A type then don't worry about it.

Funny that the dealer didn't (at least recommend) adjust the bands while they were in there replacing the solenoid.

Not so funny that my truck is now doing the 1-2-1 thing right after I adjusted my bands .

Did your truck throw a P1740 code? Reason I ask is, mine did and the dealer said same thing, "bad front pump". Well after much reading here I determined it was BS, so I cleared the code did a band adjustment and replaced the governor pressure solenoid and I think my tranny shifts better than when it was new.
All the miles on my truck since then has been with a trailer hooked to it.

I'd say adjust them. I seen how bad mine burnt just after 70,000 miles. Burnt to the point that they HAD to be replaced. Every big name tranny company recommends it and they know alot more than I do.

I know of rebuilders who say don't touch them until its needed. I've never had the bands adjusted on any Dodge I've owned and have never lost a trans. Also if the guy doing the adjusting fails to adjust them correctly it can screw up your bands in no time.

Doing ANYTHING the wrong way can screw things up.....You can even screw up a simple oil change that can result in damage to the motor, does that mean you should never change the oil??? Until DODGE puts it in their manual that you should NOT adjust the bands, I'm gonna keep on adjusting....
BTW, a friend of mine that works at a diesel shop was told that adjusting the bands in the dodge tranny is one of the most important things you can do..So it's anyone's guess who's right or wrong. That's my .02

So, we should adjust the bands only if we can do them right!!!!
If someone doesn't know how, seek advice, or watch someone do it.

I work in the auto industry. As I've spoken to technicians in different dodge shops all of them have told me to adjust the bands, especially on the first service. I've been thinking of having my first service done at 20K miles. I purchased a mag-hytec double deep trans pan and would like to install it, I can't see a reason why I wouldn't go ahead and have the bands adjusted while I have the pan off. I'll likely pay one of my dealerships to do the trans service and bolt the pan on. I am plenty capable of installing the pan, but I'm not necessarily comfortable adjusting the bands and I don't have an inch/lb torque wrench. If I do decide to do this myself, would this be OK to do with a click type torque wrence, or would the dial type be necessary like it is for setting up pinion preload?

Just did mine!!, Not difficult, just spent 2 hours running around getting the right stuff,Need a t25,t30 torx,3/4 6 sided deep socket,9/16 socket for the reverse band, torque wrenches 10-100 inch lb,red marking pen, some 1/4 inch sockets and lots of patience, but the results are more than satisfying.

Just remember, when KD band adjusting screw threads no longer protudes beyond the jam nut, the band is worn out.

That is the reason they want you to adjust them every 20-30K as when there is no more adjustment your in need of the trans being worked on. Its called job security for trans rebuilders! Stop and think if you can go 100,000 miles on Schedule A before the bands need to be adjusted then why do people think it needs to be done every 20-30,000 miles? The only time I can think it may need to be done sooner is if your Truck/Car/SUV spends its whole life in nothing but stop and go city driving.

That's what I'm facing right now with only 67k on the truck Bands were not adjusted by dealer at 30k when tranny service done but were adjusted by another shop at 60k and I was told there is no more adjustment left on front band. Truck drives worse since band adjustment, shifting in and out of 2nd gear constantly, flaring like crazy. Honestly, can't stand driving the thing

Today when i was at the dealer i asked them about adjusting my bands and they said you cant. Is this true or are they just being lazy??? After reading this thread i guess you can do it. what is the cost of doing this, my truck does the 1-2-1 thing aswell...
