hey guys how is the 48 re tarnny i know dodge has always had tranny isssues but are they fixed because i am looking at an 06 mega cab cummins and i want to keep it for a long time, also, what other issues are coming up with the dodge trucks are they better trhan chevy since that is them other brand i am looking at with the duramax thanks for the imput

The 48re is very strong in 06 trucks. It is rated to handle a jake exhaust brake which you can get installed at the dealer on the purchase price. The engine is bombproof. The 06 chevy uses a variable vane turbo with exhaust gas recirculation. Those that have worked on these seem to think the turbos will be undurable. The Tranny is rocksolid but is at its limits with the stock motor. Both trannies will require extensive modifications if you plan to step up the horsepower over 100hp. Stock the duramax defuels heavily on every shift. The 48re holds its own but needs a more solid torque converter to really shine. Long term durability goes to Dodge. Soft ride goes to Chevy. If you plan to tow real heavy go with the Dodge. If you plan to tow a little go with either. ks

My personal experience with the 48re has been fine. My truck has 50K on it without any problems. The truck pulls the family camper (5500lbs.) in summer and snow plows in winter. I haven't made any modifications.....the vehicle is just as it came from the dealer and I'm the only one who drives it. Very likely why it's still in one piece.

go to a tranny shop and take a look at the clutch discs from each of the big three tranny's. then look at the shafts input and out put from said trannys.
the 48re is pretty tough, and for the most part most people don't give it the credit that it deserves.the torque converter is the weakest link i think. but plenty good enough for stock form.

right now w/Quadzilla 100 hp box. Hope I dont go over the edge.....

have a 06 3500 CTD just replaced 48re at 54k pump went bad is this because of converter? replacing 2nd one at 59k pump again. what gives? tow 5th wheel travel trailers. thought i was driving this correctly just dont understand these issues. trading out as soon as this is repaired. probably upsizing. really enjoy the CTD though. no mods other than DC installed exhaust brake from cummins.

You shouldn't have to pay for that again. Don't they have a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty on work that is done in the shop. When I worked at Nissan everything had that. So if you had your tranny repaired and it broke before that time. Warranty issue. It wasn't fixed right the first time. If you had a timing belt that broke after it was replaced. Warranty issue. Fixed. and so on, and so on.

I know at the dealership I worked at if the vehicle had a 36k warranty and you had say 34k and they performed a warranty repair you basically got a 2k warranty on that repair. 12k, 12 month warranty usually only applies to customer pay repairs. Now if the service department wishes to do something else it is on them. But the factory will not call it a warranty repair. The service department will need to be creative in their paperwork to get the factory to cover it. And I will assure you the factory will never know.

Did you pay cash for the repair? Or use a credit card? Sometimes they offer a warranty that most people do not know about.. or utilize.
