4 wheel drive problem

This past weekend I tried to put the truck in 4 wheel drive and all I got was a bunch of grinding, the front end tried to lock up but it would slip out and not engage. I have an auto tranny that has been replaced, with the manual shifter in the floor for the 4 wheel drive. Anyone know what could be going on? I tried 4hi and 4low forward and reverse same problem.

Just wondering but don't these trucks engage the 4X4 using a vacuum of some sort that could have got pinched or a hole in it when my guy was installing the transmission.

Thanks guys,

Jason

these trucks don't use a vacuum like the 2nd gens, it is engaged and disengaged in the transfer case manually since you have the floor shifter, the front driveshaft is spinning any time your moving thats why lockout hubs are good for mileage gains on these trucks.

is this the first time you've tried to use it since having the new transmission installed? if so I'd take it back and have them fix it.

If you were not moving and had the truck in gear when engaging 4wd, I would expect that. If you were rolling and the truck was in gear and this happened, I would not expect that. Also, having the truck in motion and or having the trans in N makes it easier for the Tcase to find the gears.

Hope this helps out.
