3.42 swap in a 48re truck?

debating on swapping my 3.73's out for a set of 3.42's but I'm worried on how the low gear ratio and only 4 speed trans combo will do when it comes to mpg's. I tow no more than an atv or small fishing boat so I dont need any more power, just improved mpg's.

Thoughts?

Bigger tires/wheels would be simpler/cheaper. Seems like it would take a lot of miles to break even on the expense of changing gears. 4WD or 2WD?

If you get a Hamilton 178/208 with those gears you will get even better mpg and gain some performance. It pulls really good down low in the RPM range.

I should have said "taller" tires. It simply changes your overall drive ratio. This has been discussed in some of your other threads on this subject. Have you actually priced out changing the gears?

FYI its Tall & Skinny tires that help improve mpg numbers.
