The 2nd Gen sound:

Okay, I can't be the only one out there that somewhere deep down just kind of wishes his common rail had that old clatter'.. clatter'.. sound like my old 2000 CTD...

I still remember when I was trying out a newer (3rd gen) truck that had that nice smooth ride and hmmm... noticably quiet going down the road sound.. and quieter setting at the light (or better yet at the drive up window) and not like that clatter'..clatter'..clatter'..clatter'.. noise or should I say "music" used to play... Anyway, I remember setting in the dealers cubical and they were going to just take my truck for a quick ride to make sure all was well.. and I heard it go by.. clatter'..clatter'..clatter'..clatter'.. I remember thinking then, "I'm going to miss that truck".

I've heard all the reasons why the common rail is quieter with the injector spray timing/sequence etc.. (no going back there I guess..)

Doesn't anyone wish their new trucks sounded like the old ones?..

After driving my 2000 3500 nv5600 for 203,000 miles, the 06 just don't sound right. I guess if it was possible to go back to the single injection pulse top dead center it would rattle rattle rattle. I've only had the 06 for 6 months.

Hardly ever here the turbo on the 06. Air box is two far from the cab.

Believe it or not, just putting a 2nd gen exhaust manifold on a 3rd gen will get you more of that 2nd gen sound. You also have to fab up a different downpipe since the turbo is in a different position but lots of guys are doing this now....

The 2gen sound is "home" to me. Dad has a '99 and been driving it since '01. These past years away from Texas with my husband at the beck and call of Uncle Sam, anytime a diesel drove by in a parking lot or on the road I could pick out the Cummins. My husband laughed at how perked up I'd get as if someone called my name.

A few weeks ago I was fueling up my '06. A newer Cummins dually (with a red badge) pulled in behind me at the next pump. If I hadn't have watched the truck drive in I wouldn't have known what truck it was it was so quiet. The guy wasn't very friendly though, I wanted to nod hello and make a quip about how slow the pumps were. Instead I hopped in the truck, cranked her up and grinned as I drove away that at least my truck wasn't as quiet as his

yeah, I can identify with the grin.. when I got my 2000 CTD back in 02, the first time I pulled into Wendy's and they asked me if I would please turn off my truck, I had all I could do to contain myself. That grin stayed on for some time..

I miss that ol' truck! It was a regular cab and I needed room for kiddos, so spent money on an 05.. It does have more GO and pulls our 5'er nice.. but I Sure miss that 2nd Gen..!

Yup. My wife is sick of me drooling over the older trucks sound when they roll by. I just love the sound of them. If I could figure out how to make this one sound that way I would. I miss my 98.

i do like the old 2nd gen sound, but my 04.5 sounds just fine with my mods. i actually have to turn the truck off in a drive threw for them to hear me. I test drove the 2010 cummins the other day and i cant even tell there is a diesel under the hood.

you can make your turbo sing just as loud and clear with your stock setup mine screams like a banshee!!! the stock airbox tubing has a baffle in it that needs broke out and its a real pain in the A! but doable with a good screwdriver and a good hammer then the silencer ring comes out of the turbo. I've done it to four 3rd gens 03,04, 05, and a 07,and everytime i've had great results. sounds like the turbo is sitting in the glovebox when it spools. if you add a k&n or a cold air intake i think its actually louder. I stacked my third gen just mainly to fill in the void of hearing my old trucks clatter. while my second gen is still mis still missed... my third gen is sounding pretty good for its generation
