2500 Single Rear Wheel Parking Break Repair

All,
I just wanted to share my experience doing the rear breaks on my 2004.5 2500. First let me say they take some time and I am no expert auto mechanic.

Getting the Caliper and pads off was no big deal but the disks were another story. I pounded the snot out of them to get them off. It was not fun or glamorous but in the end the BFH won out. When taking the passenger side disk off, the parking break shoes came with it. So it was a run to the parts store to get the shoes and a hardware kit.

The parking break on the passenger side has one large spring on the top and a smaller spring on the bottom. I took a good look at how everything went then ripped it apart. When I went to reassemble the system I left the top spring for last. BIG MISTAKE! This spring has to cam into place. It would not work. What worked best for me was to leave one shoe attached via the spring clip and connect the top spring. Then you pull the shoes apart and spread it over the actuation mechanism. Once you have it in place it is easy to get the second spring clip on as well as the bottom spring. There might be a better way to do this but I could not figure it out. This was the only way that made sense to me.

I hope this helps,
John
