2006 Ticking noise

Ok I have a ticking noise. Not the normally ticking noise I hear. My dad's 06, my friends 06, and mine have all had the same normal low ticking noise. I have always had that, but I have developed another ticking noise. We parked them all 3 side by side and could hear no difference between their's. Then mine has a ticking noise that their's does not. So, just idling you can hear it. Cruising it is very quiet. While cruising if you mash the pedal gradually harder it gets pretty loud. Let off gets quiet, mash pedal loud again. It isn't like an exhaust leak. It sounds more like metal. My buddy with the other 2006 was the diesel tech at one of the dealerships locally before it shut down. He said it sounds like the valves need adjusting. I am still within my 3/36000 warranty. My truck has been stock for the past 2 weeks, because I carried it to them to have minor work done (recirc door and reseal back glass). I told them about the ticking and they said they would check it. He called and said they didn't hear the ticking, but flashed my comp with the latest flash and it supposedly fixes a ticking noise. Well no it is still there. So, what does everyone think it could be? Should I carry it back in?

Is your truck making oil? It shouldnt need valve adjustment at 36k. Probably is an injector.

I would check the valve clearance first, easy enought to do. then go from there. Make sure exhaust manifold bolts are tight also sometimes the rear most bolts #6 cylinder loosen. If you have access to scanner you can also do a cylinder kill test and see if all injectors are contributing the same and if noise changes. Inspect the transmission dipstick tube to verify if it is contacting the A/C line or exhaust. If so, adjust as necessary to obtain clearance.

White smoke and rough idle if the truck sits and gets cold.

I hope you don't plan on the dealer paying to fix your engine being you have been running these items "Smarty TNT, Edge Juice w/ Attitude, Edge EZ"

All injectors and tubes were replaced. Still the same ticking noise. I had a tuner from hypertech listen to it this weekend. He told me that it sounded to him like 1 injector was releasing more fuel than the others and causing that noise.

HERE IS A BULLITAN, DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS IN FACT THE NOISE YOU ARE HEARING AS I'M NOT LISTING TO THE TRUCK, NOTICE THE RED I HAVE HILIGHTED FOR YOU. ALSO YOU SAID SMOKE AND IDLE ISSUES WHEN COLD, DOSE IT CLEAR UP AFTER IDLING FOR 30SECONDS TO A MINUITE, AND HOW COLD ARE YOU STARTING AT? DIESELS NEED A WHILE TO WARM UP.
Some of the above vehicles may exhibit a random ticking noise that is most audible on an engine with a coolant temperature of 70°C (158°F) or higher and from idle to approximately 1500 RPM. The noise usually is most noticeable at the rear of the driver's side front wheel well. Customers may also comment about hearing a tick noise inside the vehicle at idle such as when sitting at a drive through window. All diesel engines have this condition; however, some are more audible than others. Engine build variation from engine to engine contributes to differences in perceived volume. All diesel engines are manufactured to very close tolerances to meet the durability and reliability standards.

This noise is caused by the relationship of the engine cylinder block, crankshaft journals, bearing inserts and the oil film. This relationship may allow a vibration that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. The noise could be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound, like random typing on a mechanical typewriter.

This condition has been present in diesel engines produced for the last 20 or more years. The overall noise reduction in engines produced today makes this noise seem new when, in fact, it was masked by other noises in the past. Many manufacturers such as Isuzu, Hino, Mitsubishi, and Nissan report a similar condition in their diesel engines. Testing and engine teardowns with this condition reveal no condition that would affect reliability or durability of this engine.

Dealers should not attempt to compare any customer vehicles exhibiting this noise with other similar vehicles as the noise is different from vehicle to vehicle and this may lead to the incorrect conclusion that the vehicle has a condition. This noise is a normal operating characteristic of the engine. This noise has no short or long term effects on the engine. Do not attempt repairs for this noise.

I had a ticking noise in my 06 that I thought was an injector but the "diesel tech" said was normal. Well it went away and actually the whole engine was just about silent after the injector stuck wide open and filled the whole engine with fuel. Keep an eye on you oil level.
good luck,
Topper

Not when the truck is stock. I never even played with the truck when it had power. The truck runs perfect, but the noise is rediculous. Trust me the truck has never seen the track, sled pulled, pulled a trailer larger than 5x8 or raced. This truck is babied. The noise is very noticable above the 1500 rpm that the above quote is referring to. I had the normal ticking and still do, but now this new noise has started.

Oh and the total bill for the dealer to replace the engine is $24998 if I recall correctly. Carry your truck to Valvoline and have them do and injector cleaning. Then sit back and watch your engine "run away" when you crank it. It happened to my buddy and Valvoline took care of the bill.

No it is just my daily driver. I am not hard on my stuff. I may gas on it here and there, but never excessive and hardly ever.
