2006 Mega cab hard to start after it sits for 24+ hours

Hello all. My truck turns over anywhere from 12-15x before it starts. I must be sitting more than 24 hrs to make it happen but it is 100% reproducible. I can say I change the fuel filter every 6k miles and it starts easier when I do. But only last a few days. This had also been consistently reproducible. Please help. Seems like the few looses pressure or at least a delivery problem. Thanks for any help. Jamie

This is another example where low side (lift pump) and high side (rail) fuel pressure gauges would greatly help with diagnostics.

A lift pump fuel pressure gauge would instantly tell you if you have a low side fuel pressure problem. ie. plugged fuel filter, gelled fuel, weak lift pump, etc.

If the low side fuel pressure was fine, then the rail fuel pressure gauge would tell you if you have a high side fuel pressure problem.
Weak rail relief valve, weak CP3, faulty FCA, leaking/bypassing injectors etc, etc..

IMO, these gauges are well worth it.

Pull the filter and drain the bowl. Have someone turn the truck on and off without starting while you watch to see if the fuel filter bowl fills back up. If not, you have a bad LP.

hmm

all these pointing to the LP... just a thought or consideration here.. one.. how many miles on the truck? two, any white smoke out of the pipe when it finally catches on? if it is over 100K and you do not have two micron filtration, it could be an injector, it could also rule it out if the truck drives fine once it starts im assuming? a bad lift pump will sputter and not have any power even when the truck is on, and running.. ive seen that as well.. that could rule out the LP.. what im not seeing here is this.. crossover tubes on the injectors.. have they been checked? some develop hairline cracks on them or get loose and allow some air into the system, hindering your ability to start the truck...

id start checking those, as well as the connections from the harness to the injectors, from there, id try and read some codes out of the truck, if there is none, and you are over 100K, might wanna consider having injectors checked, and adding a 2 micron filtration system to your ride... one or more injectors could be "leaking down" over a 24 hour period and returning too much fuel back to the tank... would not hurt to have them checked if you are over 100K

also as stated.. the full gauges are not a bad idea either...

No smoke ever..runs fine once it starts. No leaking fuel lines that I can tell. 158K miles on truck. 4000 running hours.. FYI I poured in a bottle of STP diesel fuel injector cleaner..may be my imagination but it seems to run better, smoother idle. But its still not cranking well enough to suit me. Still need to drain fuel filter canister and make sure it it flowing...

call me crazy..

im still sold on the idea that its a crossover tube, or an injector with a bad check valve (or two) that is returning too much fuel..

at this point, it could be the LP, but since it runs fine, truck doesn't sputter or stall when it turns on, id be 75/25 that it is not...

try checking what I posted in the last post see if any of it helps.. also, make sure all your grounds are good, and that the batteries are 100 percent..

I ran a bottle of STP diesel injector cleaner through it and is starting much better. More consistent.
