2006 5.9 24v

i recently purchased a 2006 4x4 with a 5.9 24 v cummins. i stopped in a local performance shop and the guy there was telling me that the 5.9 has an overheating issue in #6 cylinder? he says they make a "kit" to solve the problem and parts and labor would run about $600. i am not familiar with the cummins so i dont know who to trust and not to trust! is he trying to sell me something i dont really need or is he spot on with his info? i havent done any upgrades yet but will be doing an exhaust and a smarty jr unless i get better advice from someone that knows! all input is appreciated and forgive me for being ignorant when it comes to the cummins!

I am not 100% sure about that on the newer blocks.

A quick google search shows a ~$130 kit for 97-02 blocks - which appears just a few past forums posts mention it. But no overwhelming results talking about it (maybe my google search wasn't dialed in).

I could be wrong, but I have owned two 2003+ and never heard of this mod for the 3rd generation.

There is not an over heating problem but cylinders 5 and 6 do get hotter than 1-4. The only issue is if you start building more power (Smarty Jr. is completely safe) and the kit to get more water flow to the back is highly recommended.

I would skip the exhaust and put that money into a couple gauges to go with the Smarty Jr. The stock exhaust is good for 450 to 500 HP easily! Gauges are a great tool to help monitor the engine and also help determine if other problems are starting to happen.

And WELCOME to DTR!!!

NO

You just answered your own question really. You need to get familiar with your new diesel truck. Having a few extra gauges to monitor things will make diagnosing any future problems (if you ever have any) much easier. Not to mention to help keep your engine safer while towing.
This site alone has MANY hours worth of reading to familiarize yourself with your truck. It will also give you even more questions but most of the answers are here some where. And by all means, if you do not find the answer you are looking for, post up another question. There are many very knowledgeable people on this site.
