Not sure but mine gave up at around 450hp and 900 foot pounds . The factory trans has problems keeping up witha stock engine it is an out dated trans that dodge just keep tring to up date. The fist thing that went on mine was the converter. Single disk and could not take the power. Dont get me wrong i am a dodge man but i can see why they got rid of the 47 and 48 re trans.

the 48re is actually a very reliable transmission if left at stock or near stock power levels.

The EZ has 3 power settings, these numbers are added to the stock HP and Torque for total:

1. 350hp,650T
2. 370hp,677T
3. 390hp,750T

Do you see any problems with the 2006 48re holding up to these numbers?

I love all the variations of the Torque Flight, 727 thru 48 RE.

I took an auto trans rebuilding class at a JC a while back and the instructor said it had proven to be probably the most reliable auto trans ever, bar none (and he was a chevy guy).

It is simple in design (a big plus), doesn't require many special tools to overhaul, it's one of the easiest to work on (another big plus), there are lots of HD aftermarket parts available for upgrading.

The Allison is considered "the best" and even it can not handle much more than a 100 HP upgrade.

All transmissions are engineered to be smooth and handle stock power levels at rated loads (plus a little over engineering for reliabity) and thats it.

If you service your transmission regularly and know how not to abuse it, it should give many miles of reliable service. I got 180k out of my first gen. with a 727 and 114k on my 48 RE (@464 RWHP) before overhaul.

What are some tips on NOT abusing a auto trans?

The biggest factor is not overheating them. Once the fluid overheats it's too late the damage is done. The seals loose their elasticity and harden then you loose hydraulic pressure. The fluid can cause varnish build up. And severely overheated fluid could allow metal to metal contact of the gears.

Make sure to use lock up as much as you can when towing (especially up a long grade). You can get the 48 RE to lock in manual second if needed. Or if you tow a lot you could get an aftermarket controller. Monitoring temps is recommended too.

Mine is holding 467hp/915tq. My Smarty stays on level 9 all the time. I tow heavy fairly often at around 20k lbs total. I tried my hand at drag racing a couple of weeks ago. The transmission feels as solid as it did when new, with currently almost 79,000 miles.

That said, I change my trans fluid/filter every 20k miles and I don't abuse it while daily driving. And, I am saving up for upgrades! But it sure is hard to let go of so much money when mine isn't broke.

I truely feel that there are some people on here who can break a steel ball with a glass hammer.

The fluid can cause varnish build up.
Does the synthetic fluid eliminate varnish build up?

No,I can't see a problem. My dad's 2001 has 250,000 miles and had the EZ on the truck since new and tows hard every day, never opened up the tranny.

The engine in de-tuned for the rest of the drivetrain. If you "boost" the engine....boost the rest of your combo. It always amazes me how easily people will throw $400 buck to add gobbs of torque....and then wonder why the trans is junk. The 48re has proven itself as a dang good trans. There will always be those opposed to that comment, but the amount of trans work we do on STOCK trucks has dropped off dramatically. Of course we always can rely on the "bombers" who 80% of will add the cheap power and grace us with thier damaged trans sooner or later. That and I would like to know what the ratio of auto trans vs sticks there are out there. Way back in the day it seemed alot of the CTD trucks that came in were stick. It's been along time since I've seen one.
