2005 six speed
I use first pretty often.traffic, puling up to stops with a few autos in front of me,towing, easing through a parking lot etc.Find myself using it more then yiu would think.I can see on the towing issue why a little lower first and reverse would be benefical.
I agree hounddog. I use first ever time I park the truck when I pull the truck off the driveway and park on a hill. Its also manditory when manuvering the truck with a trailer around the back of the house while avoiding trees, fences etc. It is also real nice when you have to go through an id check every morning going to work when there are atleast 10 cars stopped. Ever since I got my first granny low trans 10 years ago I have loved them and would never go back. I think that most people that complain about the low gear dont ever pull the truck off the pavment. I do admit that a little higher OD would be nice for cruising unloaded though.
G56
I hope that the transmission is a good one. I am suspicious of Chrysler doing anything lately other than trying to give less for more as in the ball joints. I am sure that they will save money some how and make more profit and I hope that it is not at the expence of us as owners of these trucks. I would wait and see how it holds up with the Cummins for about three years. Seems like a good break point for them to get bugs worked out. Hate being the test dummy.

Just to clarify, the G56 is not a Getrag, it's a DC Commercial Vehicle Division tranny, introduced in 2002 in medium-duty Benzes and Freightliners. It's usually hooked to the Benz 900 diesel, so the Cummins should pose no problem for it, and it will be total overkill with the Hemi.
I believe they are not going to offer the 4.10 rear with the G56 in the Cummins trucks, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe because of the lower OD ratio. Maybe they'll bring the 3.55 rear option back.
I'm all for a lower OD but with a higher ring and pinion ratio. Slower drive shaft speed = smoother riding truck IMO.

I can't speak for everyone but my 6 speed works great. Shifts smooth and accurate. As far as quality, this 6 speed is the single best working part on our trucks, aside from the Cummins. I have yet to hear of a problem with them due to quality.
If they are going to provide a new tranny, it should be 7 speed.

I use 1st fairly often and at the same time have caught myself shifting into the phantom 7th on the highway
jka, I haven't looked but I'm sure I have the NV5600. I only have 500 miles on it and have not >quantified< the speed/rpm thing yet. I seem to remember about 2000rpm around 65/70 mph. Hope this helps.
Here's a link to the DC announcement....I can't get my .pdf to work right now...

The thing I would like to know is how does this change gross combined weight rating?
My truck with 3.73 is rated at 21000, but would be 23000 with the 4.10.
I'd love to have the 23000 (or higher) GCWR without having to be rapped out keeping up with the ever increasing highway speeds...

The link Tomeygun posted a couple of days ago showed the new 6 speeds are on restriction until the middle of Feb. Therefore, any 05's that have been sold or are on dealers lots are NV5600's. I'm guessing here, but the new 6 speeds won't make their appearance until April at the earliest.
