2005 Ram 2500 won't start

Hello everyone,
I've been a long time member but never really posted. Always enjoyed all the discussions and technical talk as I have owned numerous diesel trucks.

I recently bought this truck in the sig and I was giving it a little run to see how it performs and I was probably around 2500 rpm in 3rd gear (auto) and it made a popping noise and the engine shut down and a lot of black smoke out the exhaust. I coasted to a stop and tried to restart and it would not. It would hit on 1 or 2 cylinders occasionally but not enough to start. So I got it home later and started the diagnoses. I hooked up the scanner and could not find any codes. I checked the rail pressure while cranking and it goes up to around 7000 psi. I have bled the fuel system over and over with the key bump and still no change. It hits on what seems to be 1 cylinder per revolution and smokes quite a bit of white smoke so I kept thinking its not getting fuel but after bleeding and re-bleeding and with the rail pressure where it is at I am hopping its not the ecm. However with it hitting on a cylinder during cranking you wouldn't think so. I did finally get code p0341 camshaft position sensor but have read where extended cranking can trip this code. I also completely removed the edge box and harness to rule it out but there was no change. I don't believe it has any internal damage from what I'm seeing. This truck only has 83,000 miles also. It was running perfect before it quit.
Thank you in advance for any input.

I would pull the valve cover off and inspect the valve train.

Pull the codes first, I would check the battery connections first, the PCM ground goes to the left side negative terminal. Loose connection will cause a no start. Make sure it is clean and tight. Try disconnecting the fan clutch connector, if the fan clutch is shorted it will pull down the volts to the PCM and cause a no start. Inspect the engine wire harness near the a/c pressure transducer for damage. If the wires to ac short that will cause cam code to set also and a possible no start..

Does it make any knocking, banging or any other sounds while cranking? Have you checked your fuel filter? Maybe its stopped up and you're starving it for fuel?

Thanks for the input. I have checked the fan clutch, wiring around the ac. No noises or sounds that would indicate internal failure. I can see the front rocker arm moving through the oil fill while cranking but I may still remove valve cover. Fuel filter was replaced. Got another code after cranking P0016, cam/crank misalignment but again it may be false or from extended cranking. I don't think the other code P0341 cam sensor will keep it from starting at least from what I have read.
