2004 Engine help

Who knows of a reliable engine builder where I can get a 5.9L "600" for my 2004. I need a long block. Also what are the pit falls of changing out this engine ?

Tim

trenn we lost a engine in one of our 03's, learning a lot. in 04.5 they changed the pistons and spray pattern on the nozzles but everything else is the same (turbo and injector harness different) so it makes no difference the year model engine from 03 to 07.5, the 03 and early 04 has some valve seat troubles so try to later if you can, i can not remember if the 600 is a early 04 or a 04.5 i think the early is a 555 so i think what i give you will work. i see you are looking for a long block so i assume you lost a valve seat and the engine block scared in the cylinder if this is not the case and the head is ok you can just get a short block. just remember the early has 143* spray pattern and the late has 124* the nozzles cost about $500 if you need to swap. when i was looking the builders were wanting $2,000 for core charge so if your block is bad you are looking at about $7,000. i got in a hurry and found a add on ebay for a takeout for $1,900+ $2,000 core i called him and got him to take a good 12 valve for the core, no one else would talt to about accepting a 12 valve i drove 800 miles to Kansas city to pick it up and seen instantly i got screwed, when i got home i pulled the head (this was Thursday) i will have to bore it 0.040 over we are going to overhaul it ourselves in our shop the machine shop wants $35 per hole to bore and $27 to polish crank, the master kit is $1,200 i am going back with the late style pistons so i am going to spend $500 for the new bosch nozzles. Friday a shop near me told me he has a 05 truck that just had a major overhaul from a very reliable dealer that he would sell me for $3,500 and $2,000 installation, i do not think he would sell it if he did not get to install it. i do not see where you are, the shop is in capitan new mexico but for $5,500 + tax is going to be hard to beat. tow the truck here and tow it back

2004.5 , 325HP 600flp . Was looking for names of reliable engine builders or brands of rebuilt engines. #3 cylinder has no compression, loud knocking from block at idle must be piston slap. This is a Cummins reman that someone screwed up installing it .

Blackwater Engines? Reviva? USA powertrain? USdiesel? Whoo can I trust?

I had mine rebuilt by a local guy here in Pensacola, FL. It was Coastal Engine. He did a good job. I got 10,000 miles on it now with no problem. I did not trust one of the mass produced rebuild places.

As far as remove/install. Not bad. If you are 2wd, you will need to pull the head. I think 4x4 will come out. The crossmember gets in the way of oil pan.

Where are you located?

Most performance rebuilders will have you stick with the 03-04 pistons as they are thought to be superior. Besides the differences noted above by Carl, and different "J hook" piston oil squirters, the "600" is just programming the ecm... it is not the engine build per se. An aftermarket cam will help too as it will eliminate the restrictive "in cylinder egr".

The suggestion is to find a builder that is close to you... but you have not shared where you are.
