2004.5 engine replacement questions?

hey guys
I'm considering purchasing a 2004.5 CTD that needs a motor. I've heard dodge charges $13k for a new motor and Cummins will sell a longblock for $7900.

What do you recommend for finding a new one and what should I pay?

Also, i don't really have the time to do the swap myself, so what should I consider paying to have this done? Can you guys recommend someone in between MN and Arkansas to do the work?

thanks
Nathan

they're around. I'd check Ebay or TDR/DTR's classifieds. I know Fordcummins.com has some for sale. Depending on what's wrong with the junk engine you may not need the whole thing.

What is wrong with the old motor? I was going to buy a longblock because I had broke the crank in my old motor. I went and bought a boneyard motor for 4K and brought it home and it was full of rust and junk so I took it back and I was back at square 1. We ended up replacing the crank in mine it did no major damage to anything and ended up costin 1300 in parts. If you know someone that is good mechanically you might save yourself alot of cash. From what I have seen it takes alot to really seriously hurt these motors.

First of al, really no reason in buying a brand new motor, unless

1)You have money to burn
2)You just want a new motor and you also have money to burn

Depending on what is wrong with teh motor you have, I would fix that one. Hole in a piston? Broke crank? Cracked block? what?

You can also find them in junkyards, with a warranty backing it up. Either way, it will be considerably cheaper than buying a new motor. To swap motor's, taking one out,and putting another one in, hooking everything up, etc...you are in the neighborhood of $1500+ Looking at 6-10 hours for removal (depending on the shop) and 6-10 hours for install. 20 hours @ $75 hour =$1500. If you can get someone to do for say 12 hours @ $60 hour, you are at $720, which I would say is on teh way cheap side. You are also looking at fluids, and misc....which of course adds to the total.

So, what is wrong with the motor?

super easy to build, if you can build a 2.5L subby engine you can handle this, just remember everything weighs more then your whole subby engine.
