2004 with 3 bad pistons
2004 with 3 bad pistons
I'm looking at a 2004 with six speed that has had major engine failure. Seller says a tank of water did his engine in. He also suggests it may need injectors and a new turbo. I'm guessing water couldn't have caused this, but gasoline could. If that were the case, what else should I expect?
Water can cause it on a CR truck. It will damage the injectors and hang open the injectors which will burn up the hole. All of the injectors are done and will need to be replaced or repaired. Will need new pistons and possibly boring out.
BTW, Gas in a diesel doesn't generally wreck the whole engine. It usually seizes up the injectors and injection pump long before any other damage can occur. Water on the other hand.......
I'd love to, but a six speed conversion would cost as much as I can get this 04 for. I like my 518 better than the 48RE that was in my 03. I liked the 5 speed that was on my 95 better than either of them, but I guess I'd better just keep this beat up old $2000 93 and maybe put a Goehrend TC in it.

Just had to wrestle with this same decision just a little different.
Got an 03 with 225,000 miles - bought it at 175,000 knowing there was a blowby issue for next to nothing and got another 50,000 miles out of it (which I would say we're free miles). When the blow by got so bad I couldnt take it I had to decide to either junk the truck or put another engine in it - up and running now but spent more than I wanted - found a low mileage junkyard engine, put a new water pump and clutch in during the install, had to turn the flywheel,... Then when got it running found the injectors to be toast... So 6 injectors later (that I didn't plan for) it runs like a brand new one.
My advise - plan for the unexpected - but for the right price it mite be worth it - depends on how much bs you want to deal with - there was a lot of bs to get mine back up and running
Btw- had 2 shot pistons when we pulled the head off

If I weren't rehabbing a house 700 miles from home, I'd snap it up and rebuild. The truck has 198,000 miles and is $5k. I still might and let it sit for a year before working on it. I figure the rebuild including injectors will cost me $4k.
I'd steer clear. The engine is toast, and it's going to require more than a simple rebuild. Expect to stick over $7000 just into the engine, and who knows how bad the front end is.
Nope, it's going to turn into a money pit, and fast.

I'm inclined to take your advice, even though the front end just had a complete rebuild. I'll stick with my rotted out 1st gen.
