quickest way to tell is by looking at the valve cover sticker on the driver side and an 04 will have a 305HP rating and an 04.5 will have a 325HP rating. There are other differences also, but depends on what the previous owner has done to the truck.

 

Build date of 01 Jan 04 is an 04.5, if it has a cat, 04.5 electronic wastegate, 04.5, and what he said...^^^^

 

fan shrouds on the 03-04 look completely different than the 04.5's and up too. I believe the 04.5's and up are mounted to the engine.

 

Give me the the last 9 of your vin and I can tell you what year it is.
