2003 thru 2007 5.9 `s

Did they change much between the years or are they are the same ?

Any more stock HP or torque from 1 year to another?

Thanks.

03-04.5 there was a HO rated 555 ft pounds I think it was, and the SO that met CA emissions. After that was the 50 state 600 ft lb. engine. It got a cat converter and slightly less mpg.

The 2007 5.9 was rated at 350 hp and 610 tq. It was the only year it was rated that high. Same as the 6.7 that was replacing it.

Just an FYI.
I have a 2007 with the 5.9L.
The 5.9L highest rating was 325 hp and 610 ft lbs from 2005 to early 2007. The 6.7L was the one that got the 350 hp.

From the TDR buyers guide. ---->
Engine Ratings:
For early ‘07 models, 325 HP and 610 ft-lbs for consumer
pickup models 2500 and 3500. This is a carry-over of the
Cummins 5.9 liter engine.
The 2007.5 consumer pickup models 2500 and 3500 received
the Cummins
6.7 liter engine
rated at 350 HP and
650 ft-lbs torque with the automatic transmission, 350HP
and 610 ft-lbs torque with the manual transmission.

That would be 03-04. The 04.5 designation came about when the 325/600 50 state engine and cat were produced. Later the TQ rating was raised to 610 but I don't recall reading anything about any changes to justify the increase.

For 2005 to early 2007 a simple software update yielded the 10 ft lb increase.

I have an '03 with the 305 hp rating. I have always wondered what the difference between it and the 245 (I think) from that year and the 325 later that year were. I guess the 245 was actually the carryover engine from the prior year (was that a 24v engine?) and the 325 I assumed had different software. Does mine have a different catalytic converter than the 325 or none at all? I really haven't paid that much attention when underneath it. What are the differences for that year model?

The SO in 2003 was not a carry over. It was a 24v with the new common rail injection system. It had a cat, where the HO did not. I think there might have been a difference in the turbo as well as the programming.

From what I've seen the 03-04 HO is a great engine to have. You have the version of the good running and quiet common rail with the least amount of emission stuff, which also seems to be the most fuel efficient of the common rail/3rd gen.

03 and 04 didn't have a CAT. Not sure the 04.5 had one. My 05 certainly does.
325hp and 610tq factory.

Here is the 2003 complete break down.

2003 S.O. Federal Emissions: 250HP/460lb.ft. Available with NV4500 or 47RE

2003 S.O. Calif. Emissions: 235HP/460lb.ft. Available with NV4500 or 47RE - Cat equipped.

2003 H.O. Federal Emissions: 305HP/555lb.ft. Only available with NV5600 and 47RE until January 2003 when 47RE was replaced by the 48RE automatic transmission. The HO also has piston cooling jets.

Hmmm, I would've sworn the 325 came out that same year and thus was the HO version. So, what is the engine designation for mine when ordering parts? Is it W? I have the 305 hp with the NV5600.

The 325 hp was introduced on the 04.5 model year. If ordering engine parts directly from Cummins, you would need to provide the engine information located on the drivers side of the black plastic valve cover. There are no major parts differences between the 03 model year HO and SO motors.

What does W represent?

Don't know what W is. It just seems that I've seen that as a choice when looking for parts before, but my memory could be off. I just checked the rock auto site and it didn't have but one diesel engine choice for 2003. AHA! I just checked the Advance site and I see a W, which is for the v-10. I was mixing that up, but, they show 2 diesel engine choices for 2003. One is a designation 6, the other is C. Which one would mine be?

Look at the 8th digit of the VIN #. If it's a "6" it's an SO. If it's a "C" then it's an HO for the model year. 305 as you noted would be HO.
