2003 Lift pump....where is it?

I want to upgrade my lift pump with an Air Dog 150 and want to keep my factory filter. I am not sure if I have an in tank pump or not??

I have tried the search but I could'nt find anything specific for the 2003 models.

Is the 150 the right choice for my truck?

Thanks guys,
Kerry

The stock lift pumps are located on the fuel filter cannister. It will look like the black pump illustrated in the attached link.

I have a pic of where it is, but I can't send it at work.

If you want to keep the factory fuel filter housing, you can get a raptor 100 or 150. They will send you an adaptor plate to replace the stock pump. I'm sure that you can get the adapter plate with the AD 150, but AD does not recommend running the stock canister with the AD for restriction reasons.

I just did one of these on an 04, I can send you pics later if you want. PM me if you have any questions.

It should be attached to the fuel filter (drivers side up high near the firewall). Best way to see it is looking up from underneath from behind the right drivers wheel...unless your truck got the in-tank replacement.

I bypassed my factory filter/lift pump and kept all the plumbing in place...bagged and taped the ends. Fittings are under the seat. If my airdog ever had a problem, plan is to reconnect the factory lift pump and hope it's still working. Love my airdog for towing heavy, it never has a problem keeping up.

So if it's not recommended that I keep the factory filtration I can change that part of the plan. I may go with the Air Dog 100 since I think that the 150 requires a new in tank draw straw. I like that I can keep the factory one as a back up plan.

If you want to keep the stock canister, go with the Raptor 100 or 150. I did this with the truck I mentioned before, we hooked it to the stock fuel line coming out of the tank and onto the stock FF housing. VERY easy install, less than an hour had I not been BSing.

It depends on what YOU want I've done both.

Don't be intimadated by the draw straw, it's not that hard.

Do you really need a 150?

Are you staying stock, just want a better pump?

What are your goals?

I am currently running the Smarty JR on level 3. I don't have any problems, just want to change it before it gets me.

I would like to get the Smarty Sr but that may be a while down the road. I don't really want to make the change again but that Raptor sounds like the best way to go.

Do you supply the Raptor? How much?

I don't drop the tank, I lift the bed. Much easier, again, I have done both. It also allows you to put the draw straw in with the tank in the position that it will be sitting in the truck...

The DTR store does supply the raptor, I won't quote a price on the open forum (against the rules), however, the price in the DTR store is not correct. (last time I checked) Call Lary, he will get it to you, free shipping, too. http://www.dodge-diesel.org/

I believe that the Raptor 150 and the AD 150 are the same pump, but the AD has the water sep and filter on it. With just the smarty senior, the Raptor 150 will be plenty, however, if you see fueling mods (injectors, CP3) in your future, I would bite the bullet now and get the AD.

Also, with the Raptor, you can get a 5 mic fuel filter for your stock canister, that will help with filtration.

Again, when you make your decision, let me know, there are a few tips that I can offer for installation. Let me know before you order, you may want a part or two that is not a part of that kit.

See the silver box on the back of the FF canister? That is where your stock lift pump should be. If it's not, you have an in tank replacement...

I do not have a pic of where it hooks on the stock ff canister, but AD supplies the fitting for it.

Tips: If you have a heat gun, warm the ends of the hose before trying to push them onto the barbed fittings. I also used some wd-40 on the ends to get a smooth fit. On like a glove

A little fuel will spill from either end.

I did not remove the stock hard line, that is up to you...

The AD comes with a lot of extra wire for the battery connection, make sure you have some eyelet crimp connectors so you can cut and shorten all that wire. I also used a self tapping screw under the hood instead of mounting the relay on an existing bolt... it made for a cleaner install.

I just finished the airdog 100 on my 03 last weekend. Definitely run your return back to the top of the canister, not to the fill neck. I am sure others will tell you different, but I had the 1/4 tank issues before I made this change. I am no expert, I got some help from this forum for mine, but it is fresh on my mind, if you want my advice.

After writing the above statement, I see you are interested in the ad150. Disregard, as I am not sure about it.

That is not a bad plan, running it to the canister. I have not done it, but I would if I were doing it again.

i just did the same thing,i used a fass fuel pump found a brand new one for 195 on ebay,,i had a extra spin on fuel filter so i just installed it before the pump. i put the new lp across from the starter and down the frame abit, worked perfect, have been getting up to 27mpg w/the new pump, now i want to put a fuel pressure gauge, for monitering purpouses. took me 2 hrs,,a angle drill is almost a must. the fass system gives you the part to hook to the old lp spot, the harness and fuel hoses, fittings and all, cant hardly even hear it running.gooood luck.
