My brothers truck has had the hard starting when hot issue for about three months then about 3 weeks ago it wouldn't start. It was at two shops that after two weeks they replaced the gear pump on the back of the cp3. I even told them it was an injector but they didnt listen and he was yet again stranded at k-mart when it wouldn't start. I have a 5 month old and its a little hard to find time to do anything or I would have done it. Im a tech at cat so after hearing the issues of the injectors from here, I made a cap from an injector line from a 3406 mechanical by cuting the line just above the fitting, tightening the fitting and line to a bonnet and welded the line closed to the fitting. one at a time I capped off each injector from the rail. as I capped #3, It started slow the first time, but every time after that nomatter how long it sat, or how long it ran, it started right up. I talked to a guy from ddp and he said they leak in the cylinder, But they could also return flow to the tank. Before I did this I tryed the COV valve and it fixed it for a week. Same thing with the filter, start good for a few days than take a dump. well theres my .02$ hope that helps someone. But I wonder, Has anyone replaced just the tips?

having bad luck now again. when driving 55mph and slowing down to stop at a red light truck quits running. happens when tach. reads between 1000 & 500 rpm. bump the starter and truck starts up. the only thing the dealership didn't replace was the cp3 pump.

boostinx, good post... it is helpful information, especially the bit about making a cap for the injectors...now if only I had the time to go out to the garage and make one.. my 11 month old doesn't leave me with much time (or $) to get stuff done!!!

Haven't had a hard start in weeks, instead of letting the pump prime the system with the modified system I jump in a turn it over. Starts like the day it was new everytime, glad I never bought new injectors. If I let the system prime, it will start like garbage again. There is something happening with fuel pushed into the system.
It's cold and she starts the way a cummins should start again.

Cheers

Add me to the list. Last month or so the previously instant starts now are taking longer and longer. Sometimes takes me a couple of minutes to get it to catch. Its on an '03 HO with 118000km. Just wondering if fixing this is covered by the engine warranty? Already had the lift pump replaced at about 70,000km.

Cheers,

Hi everyone, I'm new in here, I have a 2003, 4 X 4, with 67,000 miles and having the same problem! It started about 3 weeks ago, before that it cranked longer than usual for a couple of weeks and progressively got wore until about a week ago it wouldn't start at all without a shot of ether, which I hate doing but no choise. I checked the lift pump according to someone's post a whil ago, bump the starter and the pump pumped 1 liter of fuel, checke the relief valve and it seems ok. I hate to do it but I may have to bring it to the dealer, (rapist) I just don't understand how it can start so well on ether and then run perfect right away, if injectors were bad wouldn't it skip or something??

boostinx,

That's EXACTLY the true way to isolate a bad injector. I still need to do that on my '03. Just a question or two. Did you cap off on the common rail only, or did you cap off at the common rail and the injector connector tube at the head? I have the welding equipment, but I don't spose ya want to send me your test fitting....???? I know I don't have 6 bad injectors and I'm not gonna buy 6 if I don't have to. I already know mine is bypassing too much fuel back to the tank from the injectors. I did a return flow test and busted. So, I just need to identify the culprit. Good post, smart thinking, and good luck !!.....curtis

Exact same as my 03, with 60,000 miles, it was still under warranrty so I took it in, they said it was the lift pump so they put on i the tank, that lasted 3 days , then they said it was the pressure relief valve that lasted less than 1000 miles, so they finally put in 6 injecters now it starts better than it has in years

2003 cranks but won't start

I've got a 2003 and haven't had the problem you're referring to. I did have a bad injector which I recently had replaced. However, it had no problem cranking nor did it have a power problem. It just smoked a lot when idling. New injector was put in and smoke stopped. It sounds like your issue stems from drain back of fuel reason for long winding time on starter before cranking. If so, I would look at the lift pump. It comes a time when you may need to find a good shop to diagnose your problems. Changing parts to find problem can get expensive.

Mine the injecters were bypassing fuel back into the tank at 400ml in 30 minutes (13 oz), started fine when it was cold ran great when it started.
Started out cranking more and more when it was warm , then it got to it would not start at all when warm.

I've heard the fuel pumps are failing, causing the truck to stall or not start, letting air in the fuel ect. My pal at Dodge says the in tank fuel pump kit is supposed to solve the problem, it's not a recall but should be covered under the 7-70 warranty. Looks like it didn't work so well for Justcampin but it's worth a try.

Its covered 7/100 and it should have been a recall.
