2 mic fuel filter rust

I just changed my GDP Fleetguard 2 mic fuel filter today and noticed some rust inside the filter by the bottom and more on the top around all the holes. It has been on the truck for about 23000 miles. I have never had any water in my fuel.

Has anyone seen this before. I dont like it.

John

Yes but it seems the rust can play havoc on the CP3 and injectors. That filter is the last layer of protection before the pump. Maybe steel is not the best material for the filter. At least with the stock housing you have aluminum and plastic.

I noticed that my 2u filter had a slight amount of surface rust on the exposed portion. I really hope its not that way on the inside.

It kinda makes you wonder how much rust was created post filter that got ground up by your CP3 and forced into your rail. It may still be there and has not been forced into the injectors yet.

I have about 8 very strong earth magnets sticking near the top of my fuel filter to try and stop all of that stuff.

Maybe try changing your filter at 10k so the rust does not have a chance to develop.

^^^^^ I agree. Why are you waiting 23,000 miles to change that filter?

So when you say you see rust down at the bottom do you mean you see it looking through the central threaded hole looking down into the guts of the filter?

Also is the other rust your seeing at the top of the filter canister where fuel goes in to be filtered?

I wouldn't be very concerned if there happened to be some rust on the holes at the top on the outside of the threaded hole. This is where fuel feeds into the filter.

I would be a little concerned if I saw rust down in the guts looking through the threaded portion as anything in this area is headed to the CP3.

You've got me really concerned about the little bit of rust I've seen on the filter head thats exposed to the elements now. I've not had mine on no more than about 4k... the trucks only got 7k on it now.

I think some of the problem may be condensation developing on the filter. I've noticed under the right conditions that pumping cold fuel through the filters will leave some condensation on them and even on the CP3 before things get warmed up fully.

One things for sure, if I ever lose an injector I'm not taking it back to Dodge. They'll likely void my warranty just from seeing gauges and the 2u filter, besides Id end up with a stock injector anyway!

Dave B.

Yes I saw rust down inside the filter.

I change the stock out every 10k and was going to go 20k on the 2 mic.

I will be changing more often in the future. Rich at GDP told me every other stock should be good.

Ditch the fleetguard and get a Cat 1R-0749 or a 1R-0750. (Shorter version of the 49)The filter material is wrapped around a plastic pipe and the top plate is aluminum. Nothing can rust.

Also on the CAT filter which would be comparable to the Fleetguard FF5320 in length? Also this filter will fit on the head that came with my Glacier kit right??

After what I've read here and what I'm seeing on my truck the CAT filter seems pretty sweet!

Just about any truck dealership (Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, International...ect anyone that offers Cat engines in their trucks) Cat shops of course.

Here is a brochure on them.

I'm not sure about the length of the fleetguard but Cat has several 2micron filters. I know the 1R-0749 and the 1R-0750 are the same filter except the 0750 is about 1/2 the length of the 0749. The others I'm not sure about since these are the 2 that every Cat engine we've had has used.

More 2 micron Cat filters.
1R-0749/1R-0750
1R-0751
1R-0755
1R-0756
1R-0766

If your unsure about the size most dealers usually have Fleetguard, Cat and sometimes Baldwin filters. So you could compare the one your currently using to one listed above, I'm sure they have a match.
