Angry 1ST Oil Change

Does any body beside me want to hunt down that engineer that decided to put the oil filter in that little pocket next to the engine, pour honey on him, and place him over an ant hill?? There must be an easier way. There does not appear to be any way to get it out without tipping the filter enough to spill oil down your arm and into your arm pit.
Does anyone have suggestions or am I just a glass half empty guy!!

Help a poor oily guy.............

I drop mine down from under the engine. I got hacked of and removed the air intake from the turbo when i did my first one. If you are careful and the oil isn’t hot you can do it.

I got one of the big sockets that fits over the end of the oil filter, put all my 3/8" extentions on it and used those to lower it down without tilting it. Same with putting it up there.

I agree though, the filter is in an awful difficult location.

I pay $48.65 to have the dealer change my oil, while I watch them do it. I provide the Cummins Fleetguard Stratopore Oil filter and they provide the Mopar Oil. I stay clean but watch it get done properly. I think some dealers may frown on you staying with you truck, but I have been able to do it so far.......two oil changes.

You need to go at the filter from the bottom.
"Lisle" makes a socket that will fit the filter.

Texas CTD, the Cummins shop in Fort Worth is a great place to deal with, they are on I35 on the North end. Great prices and obviously they know what they are doing. They have specials on changing the oil, filter and fuel filter.

I also use the Geno`s six in one filter socket. With a couple of extensions i am able to loosen her. When i can get a mit on ot, i wrap it in a 1 gallon ziploc bag, and down she comes. Zip it up, and throw it out. no big deal

You can use a regular oil filter wrench and go through the passenger side inner fender (plastic). It pulls back pretty easily, just slip the wrench on and loosen the filter, then from the bottom, put a couple of plastic bags around the filter and let it drop into the bags.

Don't forget to "FILL THE NEW FILTER WITH OIL BEFORE INSTALLING IT!"
Nothing like waiting for the engine to fill the oil filter while it's running without lube oil pressure at the crank.

i remove the air intake tube, loosen the filter with a regular filter wrench, slip a bag over the filter and spin it off. works well for me, i tried going at it from underneath and it was uneccessarily complicated.

Thanx all, I really like the bag around it part. I also went from underneath and just need to get that socket style filter wrench, and three feet worth of extensions.

Thank You
Dan

Hey TexCowboy.....Do you know what the Cummins place in Ft. Worth charges? It would have to be a pretty good discount under 48 dollars for me to drive over there from the Dallas side. I haven't checked to see what Cummins Southern Plains in Mesquite charges for routine stuff. I think the oil filters themselves were like 10.00......so im probably out 60 dollars total for an oil change after I take the dodge dealer the stratopore filter. Not bad for every 5000 miles. My chevy z-71 half ton got changed every 3000 for probably 30 bucks....but that only included I think 6 quarts of oil. The cummins holds what 12 or 12.5?

Does anybody know what a dealer will charge to change the front and rear Diff fluid? My next service will be at 15,000 miles. Im at 11,000 now.
