15000 checkup

Wow....went to my local dealer for the oil change since I dont have a 12qt oil pan and the 69.95 is not too bad in my opinion for oil change. Well i get her up on their rack and they say....it is time for your 15k checkup....and since it is first one you really need to do it now.

So here i am at dealership....3 weeks before Christmas...and I say HOW MUCH.

$420 was the reply......****....that was for Front Diff, Rear Diff, Fuel Filter...cant remember if it was Tranny too....but they were quoting like $120-140 for the front diff by itself. ***!!!!!!!!!

How much does that diff fluid cost per quart?

I may have to buy a large oil catcher or see if the lift in hobby shop at base is rated for 8,000 lbs.....

I am thinking I should be able to do the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, front diff, rear diff and even tranny fluid for less than $150.00 or am I smoking crack????

I am getting close to this as well... MAN that it is steep! Sounds like I would try a different dealer.

I will call mine tomarrow and see what they charge.

you can buy a 15 qt oil change pan, engine oil and filter, the 7 qts of diff fluid, along with tranny fluid for a drain and fill and get enough to do your transfer case-if you have a 4x4. all accomplished for under 200.00 bucks and three hours of your time!

You are not smoking crack. Do it yourself and save a ton of money. You don't need a lift. Your truck sits up plenty high enough to get under it and do whatever you need.

Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil runs about $8-9 a quart at Ghettozone. You can buy trans fluid and filter at the dealer (Mopar ATF+ 4). Buy yourself a good 15qt oil pan.

When you do it yourself, you know it has been done right. You also get the pleasure of doing it and learning more about your truck. IT is not complicated, just get the stuff you need.......take your time....and go knock it out. IF you get stumped, just get on the computer and ask a question here...somebody will answer it.

Ohh....and you can get your fuel and oil filters from Geno's Garage. Oil from Walmart. I use Shell Rotella T but there are plenty of good brands.

thanks....yeah it took him about an hour to do the whole thing with it up on rack....I figured there has to be cheaper way to do it.

I guess I will buy my filters from the local Cummins dealer here in Charleston....buy my fluids and wait for the next scheduled lube fest!

I dont tow a lot so really was not excited about having to follow the schedule but until warranty is through I cant ease it up I guess...

Which Charleston dealer quoted you $420? I'm not anywhere near 15k miles, but this would be good to know for future reference.

And you don't HAVE to buy your trans fluid from the dealer. Walmart has it in their Super Tech line for around $3 a quart. Valvoline also makes genuine +4. It's around $4 a quart. I do buy my trans filters from the dealer. Aftermarket doesn't seem to have them available yet. At least my local guy doesn't have a listing for the 48RE. You don't need a new trans gasket. The OEM one is reuseable as is the rear differential cover gasket. BTW, the owner's manual says NO change is necessary if you don't tow. Otherwise, the interval is 30,000, not 15. At least it is for my '04.

you can get all the fluids from amsoil cheaper than from the dealership. all told, the 15k service (oil, trannie, front, rear, and fuel) from a dealership is near $600. I got a local shop to do it for $350 the first time, and $400 the second. fluids went up in the last year, how oil going up affected syn fluids, I'm not sure, but there you go. whatever you do, save all your receipts and DC/Cummins can't say squat.
