11mpg ????

Not my truck, but my friends 07 4WD 3500 CCSWB auto. He can only get 11-12 mpg out of this rig. It will soon be for sale as he is really upset about this. He doesn't want to tinker with anything while under warranty. This is sorry fuel mileage!!! He has 20k on it & it has been dragging a trailor around also so it should be broke in.
Any suggestions?????

yes, it has been discussed on this site before, but keep your rpms at 1700 when cruising. Thats 52 mph for me, sorry. Inflate your tires to max. Take that extra crap out of the cab and bed. Set a bowl of gold fish on the front seat.
I'm getting 20m/g with 15k miles and the goldfish are doing fine.

What gears does he have 3.73 or 4.10? 3.73 give better mpg the 4.10's. Is it his first diesel? If so tell him you don't drive it like a V8 gas engine you use the TQ and not the HP. Also as stated above try to keep the trucks speed under 65 MPH and under 1800 RPM's while getting up to speed and keep the tires aired up. Don't race from stop light to stop light and go easy on the go peddle when taking off from a stop. I get my best fuel mileage between 55 and 60 MPH.

Is the 11 - 12 mpg towing or empty? If towing, how much does the trailer weigh?

Not first diesel, they have around 25 different trucks...all diesels. Some real big, others pickups. This just happens to be his personal truck.
This is empty 11-12. Not sure of the gearing??? I think it's a 5.9 though.

Uuuh, if it's an '07 why doesn't he take it to the dealer and have them figure it out? He should be getting at least 16-17 mpg at 20k empty with 3.73 or 4.10's.

If it is a 6.7, then there has been much discussion about how poor their fuel mileage has been. Most think it revovles around the DPF and regen issues.

For the 5.9, could be 4.10s and he likes going 75-80 on the highway? If he thinks this truck is bad, let him buy the new Ford 6.4 F-450. Guys over there think they are getting great fuel mileage when they hear someone is getting 10 MPG. (I know the 4.88s and the 9K lb truck has something to do with it)...

Is the oil level rising? I'd start thinking about injector problems.

And at that (relatively) low miles, I'd get it into the dealer. The '06 CTD in my sig gets 18.5mpg freeway, 14.5mpg mixed city driving, and 13.5 towing my boat through 6-9% grades at 65mph. I do let it shift at 2k rpm and have 3.73 gears.
