07 6.7 -- cleaned mass airflow sensor - truck wont start

So our 6.7 has been displaying "perform service" on the overhead display.

Trying to eliminate it.
Reset oil change light.
Nothing.
Change crank case filter.
Nothing.
Clean MAF.
Nothing, at first. Drive about 15 miles and "system ok" displays. First time in months.
Sweet. Driving for about another 10 miles and the truck dies while driving, shifting from 3rd to 4th.

You can put the key in the ignition, turn it forward and the dash lights up like normal. No warning lights or codes. Display still says "system ok" but if youturn the key to start, nothing.

If anyone has any insight please let me know.

I'm at a loss.

Its been a week now and the truck is still down.

Dad refuses to take truck to the dealer so hes been jumping from one shade tree mechanic to the other trying to get his truck going.

Current guy, who has a small shop, is saying/guessing that something with the security system has put the ECM on lock down and is in some kind of high level anti-theft mode.

Anyone know anything about this?

Guy claims its either that or the whole ECM unit is burnt out and will need to be replaced to the cost of about 3k.

3k for a computer?

Again, the trucks not throwing any codes or error messages. You hop in and turn the key on and everything acts like its ready to go. Turn it forward to start and nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

First, you posted this in the 5.9 section which may explain why others with the 6.7 haven't responded.

Can you pull codes? I don't like going to the dealer either, which is why I invested in the AutoEnginuity Scan Tool. It has saved me quite a bit and even allows features to be enabled that would otherwise require the dealer to activate.

There could be a communication issue between the TIPM and ECM. I bet it is the TIPM. I was stranded at work for about 45 minutes one day when my truck wouldn't start. The TIPM wasn't allowing any communication. After turning the key on and off, then finally disconnected the batteries for a few minutes, everything was back to normal.

Another problem I had was with the batteries. One day zero problems, next day truck wouldn't start. Voltage was too low. Replaced batteries and back to normal.

To reset key on engine not running step on brake twice then gas pedal twice turn key off then on. Did you try disconnect both batteries for 10 minutes then reconnecting?
That will reset SKIM module (anti-theft) if it is locked up preventing engine from starting. Also check the power and ground to PCM, Check the ground to left side battery, if corroded or loose since this grounds PCM module on certain year trucks. If black 10 gauge wire coming from PCM to ground terminal on battery, make sure this is clean and tight. Both batteries tested good??

Ooops, my bad.

Didnt realize I posted in the wrong board. Perhaps a mod could help out a lost soul and relocate this thread to its proper home.

We have no way of checking the computer via plug in module or programer. Truck is stock(despite my attempts to convince a change).

Truck it outta my hands now. Some guy who supposedly used to be a Dodge mechanic has an independent shop now is working on it now. He is saying/guessing that something with the security system has put the ECM on lock down and is in some kind of high level anti-theft mode.

Anyone know anything about this?

Guy claims its either that or the whole ECM unit is burnt out and will need to be replaced to the cost of about 3k.

Is 3K really the cost of a new unit?

They range in price, get the last 8 of your vin and call a dealer they can give you a price. + it will need to be programed. Should have did the battery disconnect first. Could have saved you some money.

There are companies that do repair ECMs, if that is what's wrong with it.

Firstly, $3k is way too much to buy and swap an ECM.
You can find a used and working ECM in the $700 range, though it is relatively important to buy one that is the same year and outfitted the same as your truck.

BUT before replacing the ecm, I would be sure to check the condition of both batteries, each the terminals, the battery wires, especially the crossover cable, and ALL ground connections from the batteries to frame.

If all those checked out, then I would begin to check the security key/skim modules, though since my truck does NOT have that, I do not know how to check them.

BUT start with the basics...your former Dodge mechanic may well be overlooking something to the tune of 3K.
