07 5.9 cr vs my 02 5.9 vp

A few months ago I was looking at getting an 06 rc cummins but it got bought before I made it to the dealer to to actually look at it. Recently I found a 07 regular cab with low miles. The truck is a 4x4 auto with the cummins of course. Its a nice looking truck from the pics i have seen of it. My questions are to the guys who have 07 5.9's how do you like them? Are there any differences in them from other 3rd gens? I was told certian boxes won't work on the late 06's and 07's, this true? How would it compare to my 02? I'd like some opinion of guys that made the 2nd to 3rd gen switch. Also, are there any known problems with the 07 trucks?

As far as programmers the TST wont work. And people with Smarty's are having defueling problems above 3000rpm. Other than that they are rock solid.

They don't have PPE Hot 2 either. The newer trucks will out pull any of the older 2nd gens stock for stock anyday. The 3rd gens especially the later 05-07 can make 600hp fairly easily with some modifications in programming and turbo/tranny.

If your worried about programming issues get a truck with a "build date" of PRE-june '06, then you shouldnt have any problems with any program you select. The CAN BUS system was introduced in 6.5 trucks. Thats also the only "known" problem is that you cant use a couple of downloaders.

However the big mitigating factor with that issue is that you are getting one of the last 5.9's and you can never go wrong doing that.

The 2nd gens sound way cooler and often times get better gas mileage. So really its up to you. I love my 07

Thanks for the responses so far. I do like my 02 alot, was my first diesel pickup. Been a good truck but its startin to show its age now at 150k. I do keep very good care of my truck but a few things need attention or will need attention in the future. A friend had owned a 04, 06, and now an 08 dodge CTD. I have riden in all of them and they are very nice riding compared to my truck. Do the 3rd gens have the steering problems the 2nd gens have? Do they have any other engine problems? Not being able to run certian prgrammers doesn't both me, I do want to turn it up a little but I might till warranty runs out on it anyways. They do sound different than a 2nd gen but they still sound like a cummins to me. Having one of the last 5.9's would be pretty cool too.

I'd say the sound of the 2nd gens is really cool, but living day to day I've come to like the much quieter CR's. They also seem to cold start easier. Track bar is much improved.

AAM axles seem pretty durable.

My 03's NV5600 didn't shift all that well (even for a truck), compared to the 2nd gen 5 speed we had at work that snicked through the gears like a sports car. From reading threads, it sounds like some NV5600 3rd gens shift great, and some don't.

The G56 in my current truck shifts much better.

I loved my 01 and had alot done to it, however this 3rd gen truck i just got is much more enjoyable to drive. Rides and handles better and the power from the motor stock is great. The only one thing that i have noticed is that my
01 seemed to have better low end power then my 06. The sound of a second gen to me sounds much better then a 3rd gen, but not enough to make me regret getting one.

Replace the cat and muff with an aeroturbine resonator and you'll be frightening children and small animals everywhere you go!

Sounds like everyone is pretty happy switching from 2nd to 3rd gen trucks. I'm gonna look at a few 07's I found and save up a little more cash. I doubt they'll be selling anytime soon.

I'm thinking when I purchase one I would like a 5 inch exhaust, intake, gauges, and maybe a mild box to start off. Do these truck have problems with the lift or transfer pumps? I think they are in the tank if I'm right.

I also made the switch about a year ago and im not so sure i made out. I had a 01 2500 6spd 4X4 Sport and i loved that truck. IMO i never should've traded it for the one i have. Now i will say that my 3rd gen will outrun the second gen anyday of the week while riding better. But the second gen trucks are just beasts IMO.

I'll go along with that last part, except in my case it refers to a 1st Gen. But here, I kept the 1st Gen, and it still outruns the '07. Not by much, but it does. It's probably making close to the same HP, more torque and weighs about 1klbs less.

Another thing to consider is the sheet metal. I dont know about the years your looking at, but my son has an 08 and it seems to me the sheet metal is thin. Its sure not as thick as my '99s. His 08 is very easy to dent. I have had my truck for 10 years and 188k miles. It has worked hard as a work truck and DD. It has no dents at all and he has had his 08 for 6 months and it already has a few dents. I would hate to imagine it after 10 years.
