The only bad thing for me about getting it done is dealing with my local dealer. Idiots.

Mpg

21.5 MPG empty at 65 mph and 12.5 10K fifth wheel at 65 mpg. See Sig for extra's add to my truck. Stock would see about 16 - 17 highway, and I have had the TSB done.

06 Mileage

My 2500 6 speed quad cab was built 9/05. Its got 1300 miles on it and it gets 16.5-17.5 in town with no interstate driving. Its not been reflashed (as far as I can tell) it starts easily hot or cold. Its got the 3.73 rear. I haven't towed anything with it yet but changed the oil recently (Rotella 15/40) and will tow the boat this coming week. One thing I did notice on the engine starts is if you start it like a gas engine ie go from off to start with no delay it will crank for a couple of seconds if its warm. If you pause for just a second in the on position then hit start its almost immediate. I think the computer needs a little time to do its computations for the start. Maybe....

Is this all I can expect???

Last month, I purchased a new '06 2500 Ram diesel with auto trans. Solo on the highway at 70mph, I'm getting about 16mpg. Just completed an 800 mile trip with a 5500lb travel trailer in tow. Kept the cruise at 70-72mph and the truck performed very well. However, I'm appauled at my 9-9.5 mpg. Before I bought the truck, I read many postings on several sites claiming 12-15 mpg towing heavier trailers. Is this si what I can expect towing. I'm pretty disappointed. Love to hear from others who tow similar trailers at similar speeds. THANKS! PCM

Interesting thread

15,000 miles on my 06 quad cab dually, 4wd 6spd.

Started out with 12, it has increased to 14 by actual calculation. The overhead console mileage is about the same. And no, the same trip every day didn't somehow change in distance when I bought a new truck. Pulling something heavy drops it to 9 or 10.

I have had Cummins trucks before that got around 20. I was expecting about 17 or 18 out of this one. I have so much black smoke coming out the exhaust that it has turned my truck black. I know that it was made prior to Nov. 05 and sat on the lot for many months.

I am going to try the flash next week, and see what that does. Otherwise, I'd be better off trading this on in and getting a used one.

my 04 automatic 2 wheel drive quad cab gets 20.5mpg at 60mph and 16mpg at 70mph. all hand calculated. the truck just isnt near as efficient at higher speeds. slow down and your mileage will go way up if you can stand to go that slow.

I just came back off of a 2400 mile round trip to Topeka Kansas and I averaged 16.2mpg running at 70-75mph for the most part. The only time that I slowed down was for the Mountains off 64/77 in West Va and Va/NC (Fancy Gap). But my trans would not let me go out of 1st after running a while then coming to a stop. I would have to wait about 30 min-to-45min depending on the outside air temp to get her to shift into 2nd. The Auto is great for daily driving, but for towing it stinks! Oh-----I was towing around 5,000 pounds all together. Mileage is great and Trans stinks!

This feature still really bugs me. I had the reflash last week, it made my shifting way less jerky. The trubo seems to spool faster too? Anyway, I was told when they did the re-flash that my software was already up to date with the "long crank" issue, so they weren't sure why I was still experiencing it. Nothing like having to try twice cranking over a new truck to make it start..............

I have been recently making a 55 mile commute to a local ski resort for work and have been getting 19's, granted i am usually only going 60mph as the traffic is very slow and long windy drive, but when i first bought the truck it started out at 11-12. I know have 12k on it, and have pulled a couple of heavy loads up to about 9000ft. and it seems like it finally loosened up a bit. I actually hit 20mph yesteday on the way home (downhill most of the way) was really happy. Seems like it is really efficient 60-65mph above that it sucks her down. Now if i could just get the darn thing to start and get the a/c to work right i would be better.

My a/c KICKS, I have read dozens of posts about it sucking (not blowing). Mine will run you outta there, Ice cold and blows strong.

They have to come up with a re-flash to make them start properly though, that is getting old. My 2001 would fire just about before you turned the key (okay, maybe not that fast), but quick!

My '06 Mega Cab has about 2400 miles on it now and hand calculated mileage is 18.3 with 80% highway and 20% city driving. I put the CC at 69-71mph for most of my highway driving. It has slowly gotten better with just about every tank of fuel I put in. I will wait about another 2-3K miles and then will probably get the TSB flash 18-041-05 and see if it helps any more.

Second fill up @ 690 miles I got a hand calculated 14.7 MPG with some very light and infrequent towing. This is proabably 75% in town too, I did very little highway travel on this tank.

I'm not alll that worried, I have a long way to go before it's truely broken in.

One thing, I never got a low fuel light. I was showing right about at an 1/8th and it took 31.12 gallons (which, by the was $90.50 worth of diesel)

I'm used to my old one, I nevered seemed to squeeze more than 25 gallons in it after driving 15 or 20 miles with the light on!!

I reflashed mine last week and the long crank is gone, it starts right up. Never had to crank it a second time.

The turbo does seem to spool faster at lower RPM's, is the wastegate computer controlled? More than likely it just changed the fuel delivery curve and it has more power and more exhaust earlier in the powerband than it used to.

I have a six speed, so my shifting was never a problem. This must have been an auto fix?

My mileage according to the overhead has increased, but it gave overly optimistic numbers for towing. It said 12 and I got 10.5... but that's better than 9. I will check it this time around, according to the odemeter and what's left in the tank it might actually be making something close to the 16.1 mpg shown on the overhead. I calculate the mileage almost every fillup.

It may sound dumb, but I was talking about a smoother shifting MANUAL. It was almost like it was hangin on to the proir gear, making for a jerky shift or something. Maybe it was in my mind?
Oddly, after my reflash I had one solitary incident of long crank (at least long enough I gave up). It is still much longer than my 01, but atleast it's not cranking for ever every third time now.
So, I am not the only one who noticed a turbo spool difference either?
Cool.
