'06 Injector Problems

Got a friend of mine at work with a '06 with ~40K miles on it that has bad startup smoke when cold. (see attached picture) Anyone have any ideas before he takes it in? I am ruling out the heater grid since it is warm here (Central Florida) and mine hasn't even come on the last couple mornings.

We are thinking it is a injector issue. Will a Cummins dealership do warranty work on it, or does it have to go to a Dodge dealership?

Thanks,
Tobin

Does it shake, vibrate or sound wierd on start up? does it still pull good? Check engine light come on ever?

Since 2003 Dodge has been buyin these engines for Cummins with no warranty of any kind, dodge gets them cheaper that way and its dodges warranty on the engine not Cummins, after that dodge has locked Cummins out of the electronics for these trucks so they are severly limited as to what they can do for you, the best thing i can tell you is to call your local dodge dealer or customer service number and ask for authorization to take it to cummins to be worked on, you will hafta pay to fix it at Cummins and then wait to be reimbursed by dodge after the fact.

It may be different than that in the US but i just went thru all this tryin to take my truck to Cummins Western Canada to get a broken pushrod fixed and was told to take it to my dealer cuz i might not get paid for it by dodge to cover what it cost me to fix it

Good Luck
Let us kow what happens

Just posted yesterday for 1 bad inhjector replaced. Had same smoke on cold start and could feel rough idle even when warm when stopped at light etc. Engine light was on and off and dealer identifed #3 injector through code and replaced. Did fuel injector cleaning service 1st- improved but injector was bad, replaced and truck runs like new- 110k miles.

I had a puff of white smoke at start up that would clear in less than 30 seconds. Never had a ck engine light. They did An injector test and found #5 only at 86% and they replaced it. They said I caught it early. They should be able to replace injectors way before they get bad.

If they replace injector(s) add a 2mic fuel filter and reduce the chance of any future injector problems...

Had two injectors go bad on my 06 at 26K miles. Dodge dealer replaced them under warranty. They were leaking down into the cylinders after the truck sat for an extended period of time.

It still smoked for a few days afterwards but now has no issues. Never had any check engine lights while they were bad either. Just the white puff of smoke for a few seconds at start up.

Did your mileage went down when you had problems?

4 months ago I had the same problem. Hard start, rough idle, blue smoke and I, as well as people on this forum, were convinced it was a leaking injector. It went to the dealership twice and the first time they couldn't duplicate the problem and the second they reflashed it with the TSB for white smoke on starts below 60 degrees. This reflash helped a little but that wasn't the cure and all my starts were above 70 BTW. Here are 2 videos for reference, the first was taken before it went to the dealership at all, and the 2nd was taken after they did the reflash.

Long story short, it ended up surprisingly enough, being a plugged fuel filter. I changed the fuel filter the day after the 2nd video was taken, after I was able to order some Baldwin 5 micron filter's off the internet, and that fixed the problem. So check your fuel filter first, it might just fix it.

Thanks for the help. I will ask about the fuel filter, and if that doesn't cure it then it is off to the dealer for injectors.

I did have some white smoke a few days after the injectors were replaced. I changed my fuel filter to a 2 micron Fleetguard as the other had a few thousand miles on it and all white smoke went away.

I haven't really seen a difference in fuel mileage. They did a TSB flash for my fuel mileage tattle-tell gauge so it reads all whacky now but when if I keep my foot out of the throttle and when on the interstate keep the engine under 2000 rpm I notice I get tremendously better fuel mileage.

With varying driving conditions I think I get anywhere from 15 - 19 mpg. Maybe more but I'm to lazy to hand calculate.

Mine was in the shop twice for injectors. First time, 1 was replaced, the second time, they replaced all of them. No problems since. That was about 18 months ago with less then 20k miles on the truck. Service man said it was common due to a bad batch of injectors from the factory. pcm

Took to the dealer, first thing they replaced was a "bad ECM." Sure enough that didn't fix anything. Now they are going to start replacing injectors.

just out of curiousity did they tell him whether the offending injectors were really messed up or just kinda a little bit screwed?
