They are both 4 speeds, the difference is in 06 you are able to lock out OD.

The 06 can lock up in 2nd gear but easily does it in third gear but unlocks to go to overdrive unless you have a commander to hold it locked. It is the first of the stock 48re's to be able to hold for an exhaust brake. It's the best of the rest for sure. Put on a decent Torque converter and it will hold up to a lot. ks

yes they beefed up the tranny for 06.
If you look at a sales brochure, it has all the improvements that they did to it.

Take a look at an 03 brochure for the 48RE. Its the same.Aside from some changes to the TV system in 05 the trans is pretty much the same from 03 up.

I think they are basically the same between the 05 and the 06 The one difference I noticed this weekend hauling 5 tons of hay is in the tow/haul mode it changes the shift points bigtime and locks in gear to help on the downhill side. The od lockout works the same as my 99 and 03....this is my first 48RE and they added the tow haul feature....seems to work ok.

My 03 SO with the 47re was the worst combination of motor and trans that has ever been. The trans was terrible. It never left me stranded, but the darn thing would shift early, and the motor just didnt have the umph!! It was like it would hit a dead spot in the power band at around 62mph pulling anything over 5,000 pounds. She would just fall on her face. The new 48re is great in comparison. Shifts are firmer and better timed. The tow/haul and the OD Lockout is great. I'm really happy with the new truck!!
