Question 05 vs 04

Any thoughts...did they do anything to make the 610 quieter than the 600? Does it seam that the 610 is quieter at idle than the 600?

I have heard several 05's, and I can tell you for a fact that they are quieter than the 04 600's, I have a very very early build of Jan 26, 04 on my 600 with 4500 miles on it and it is alot louder than any 05 I've heard, you cant even hear the o5's they make almost no noise JMHO

no difference whatsoever between 600 and 610 motors. Vehicle NVH package upgraded for 2005

Cummins makes sure power is on high side of tolerence, so when durasmack went to 605, Cummins just renamed it a 610.

i'm not saying the engines are different, but to me the 05's are much more quiet at idle than the 04.5's are. they must have done some rework to make them quieter at idle. once up and running down the road they are the same, but at a stand still the 610 is not as loud as the 600.

I dont know about the noise ,but the auto trans are different. You CANT lock out 4th on the 05s where you could on the 04s. To me thats a vary important feature for towing

I know my 04.5 was real quiet when I first got it and has slowly gotten louder with the increasing mileage. I believe the injectors are causing the idle noise increase (search "injector knock" for more info). I would bet that the 05's will be just as loud after they put some miles down unless they have changed the injector design.

I just ordered my new 05, (former powerstroke fan) and yes I believe they are quieter than the 04's. Though they both sound much better than my former 6.0

I'm not sure about the difference in noise at idle being the injectors. I had all 6 replaced in mine, due to the knock at idle, but it's still there. It must be something else. Maybe they did some redesign of the fuel delivery to make the 610 more quiet at idle.

I gave a lift to a Ford diesel owner the other day. I don't think he realized mine was a diesel until I mentioned how they substantialy reduced the noise with the new diesels. Impressively quiet.

Purchased my 2004.5 this past October, and in the past 3,000 miles it has gotten LOUDER. Under 1,000 miles I could stand at the rear by the exhaust and could not hear the diesel engine only the exhaust (which sounded like a gas burner). Now after 3,000 miles I can HEAR the diesel engine when standing by exhaust.

Good news is that it's much less lound than my Gen 1 was
